Essay from the year 2007 in the subject History Europe - Other Countries - Middle Ages, Early Modern Age, grade: keine, language: English, abstract: It is a historical fact that the two armies - Turkish and Serbian - clashed near the village Černomen (Chirmen, Chernomen, Chermanon) at the River Marica (Mariç, Ebros, Hebros) on Friday the 26th, September 1371, and that a slaughter beyond description took place. The Serbian army suffered a true massacre in which both brothers King Vlkasin and Despot Ugljesa were slain. The battle is today commonly called the Battle of Marica (after the river Marica in today's Bulgaria) or the Battle of Chernomen (after a nearby small village on the lower Marica River). In trying to accurately convey the course of the battle one has to be contented with the contradictory assertions of the chronicles. What we can say with certainty is that Sultan Mūrad "did not participate in the clash, as he was not yet in Rumili. It seems that he was occupied with matters concerning Anatolia." Elizabeth Zachariadou points out that the battle was not fought by the regular Ottoman army but by the army of the gazis. Vlkasin was surprised by the greatly outnumbered Ottomans. Namely, led by Sultan Murad I's Lieutenant Lala-Şâhin-Bey - Beylerbeyi (governor) of Rumeli - the Osmanlis attacked the Serbian camps in a night raid and managed to achieve victory against all odds. After this defeat, the Mrnjavčevics virtually vanished from the political scene. Not the Ottomans, but Manuel Palaeologus made use of this defeat of the Serbs to add Serres (Despot Ugljesa's land) to his appanage at Thessalonica.

"We live in an era where the university system is undergoing great changes owing to developments in financing policies and research priorities, as well as changes in the society in which this system is embedded. This change toward a more market-oriented university, which also has immediate effects in academic peripheries such as the Balkans, the Middle East, or South-East Asia, is of great influence for the pedagogical practice of "less profitable" academic areas such as the Humanities: philosophy, languages, sociology, anthropology, history.Because of the absence of a historically grounded establishment of the Humanities, academic peripheries, usually accompanied by a weak civil society infrastructure, seem to offer the most fertile ground for rethinking the Humanities, their pedagogical practice, and their politics, as well as the greatest threats, such as the ongoing capitalization of research, and profitability as the norm of educational achievement. The sprawling presence of for-profit universities and in academic peripheries such as Albania and Kosovo is indicative of this problematic, as are consistent underfunding of universities and the relentless budget cuts in American and English, and to a lesser extent European, universities. Motivations for this ongoing attack on the university are often driven by a political system or a politics with an aggressive stance to critical thought."

Victorian Women S Fiction written by Shirley Foster and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-21 with Literary Criticism categories.

Focusing on the ways in which female novelists have, in their creative work, challenged or scrutinised contemporary assumptions about their own sex, this book's critical interest in women’s fiction shows how mid-nineteenth-century women writers confront the conflict between the pressures of matrimonial ideologies and the often more attractive alternative of single or professional life. In arguing that the tensions and dualities of their work represent the honest confrontation of their own ambivalence rather than attempted conformity to convention, it calls for a fresh look at patterns of imaginative representation in Victorian women’s literature. Making extensive use of letters and non-fiction, this study relates the opinions expressed there to the themes and methods of the fictional narratives. The first chapter outlines the social and ideological framework within which the authors were writing; the subsequent five chapters deal with the individual novelists, Craik, Charlotte Bronté, Sewell, Gaskell, and Eliot, examining the works of each and also pointing to the similarities between them, thus suggesting a shared female ‘voice’. Dealing with minor writers as well as better-known figures, it opens up new areas of critical investigation, claiming not only that many nineteenth-century female novelists have been undeservedly neglected but also that the major ones are further illuminated by being considered alongside their less familiar contemporaries.

Written by the winner of the 1987 BAAL book prize, this book deals with the acquisition of understanding of foreign cultures and peoples. It is also a study of the philosophy and purpose of language teaching in all its facets, in the context of foreign language teaching in secondary education. The book is written for language teachers and, though it draws on disciplines not usually included in their education and professional training, it does so from within the profession's own perspective. It is an attempt to raise teachers' and learners' awareness of the full educational value of foreign language learning
