Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject German Studies - Modern German Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Regensburg, language: English, abstract: The story "The Sandman" by E.T.A. Hoffmann appeared in 1816 in the first part of the story cycle "Nachtstücke". Throughout the cycle, the typical Romantic interest in the night side of nature, in the uncanny, the morbid and the criminal, prevails. "The Sandman" is the most famous story in the collection. It is about the student Nathanael who, already engaged to the bourgeois girl Clara, falls in love with the daughter of a professor, the beautiful Olimpia, at his place of study, until it turns out that she is not human but an automaton. This deception, and also the repeated confrontation with the horror of his childhood, the Sandman, threatens his identity to such an extent that it drives him to madness and finally to death. Probably the best-known analysis of the "Sandman" was written by Sigmund Freud in 1919 in his study of the uncanny, and here he relates the fear of eye-snatching to the fear of castration. The discussion that grew out of this makes Hoffmann's first night play one of his most discussed narratives, which has been taken up again and again by many interpreters of different scientific theoretical orientations. This essay by Freud, as well as various other interpretive approaches, will now be discussed in more detail here. In addition, the central motifs which permeate the narrative and which occur in an extraordinary density will be closely examined and some thematic aspects, such as the automaton motif and the artist problem, will be presented. A comparison will also be made with Todorov's definition of fantasy.

"The Sandman" is a short story written in German by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It was the first in an 1817 book of stories titled The Night Pieces. "The Sandman" begins with a series of letters between the protagonist, Nathaniel, his close friend Lothaire, and Clara, Nathaniel's betrothed. Nathaniel tells his friend (though the letter is accidentally read by his fiancee) about how the tale of the Sandman terrified him in his youth. According to folklore, the Sandman is a being that sprinkles sand over children's eyes to make them go to sleep."

A Study Of The Major Novellas Of E T A Hoffmann written by Birgit Röder and has been published by Boydell & Brewer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Literary Criticism categories.

Analysis of the novellas of the German Romantic writer and composer, focusing on the issues of art and the artist. The German Romantic writer and composer E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) -- perhaps best known to the English-speaking world through his Nutcracker and through Jacques Offenbach's opera Tales of Hoffmann -- struggled toconvince his predominantly bourgeois public of the merits of art and literature. Not surprisingly, many of his most important novellas are bound up with the dilemmas of art and the challenges faced by the Romantic artist, and itis these Künstlernovellen that are the focus of this study. Birgit Röderargues that Hoffmann's artists are not simply individuals who create works of art, but rather figures through whom the author explores the predicamentof those who reject the conventional world of bourgeois reality and seek to assert the claims of the imagination in a world dominated by prosaic rationalism. Contrary to previous scholars however, Röder demonstrates that Hoffmann's novellas clearly warn against a view of art as an autonomous aesthetic realm cut off from the world of reality. This is particularly apparent in Röder's analysis of gender relations in Hoffmann's oeuvre -- especially the relationship between (male) artist and (female) muse -- which underlines the extent to which art, literature, and the imagination are inseparably bound up with the prevailing social reality. The novellas that are given extensive consideration are Das Fräulein von Scuderi, Der Sandmann, Die Jesuiterkirche in G., Die Fermate, Der Artushof, Don Juan, Das Sanctus, and Rat Krespel. Birgit Röder teaches German language and literature at the University of Reading, UK.

The young student Nathanael remains haunted by his childhood fears: he is convinced that Coppelius, a strange night-time visitor who used to come to his house to conduct alchemical experiments with his father - the latter dying as a consequence of one of these sessions - was none other than the Sandman, a mythical figure who was said to steal the eyes of children who refused to go to sleep. When a mysterious Italian salesman with a beautiful daughter moves into town, Nathanael's suspicions are reawakened, pushing him to the brink of madness as extraordinary event unfold. First published in 1816, this classic of German Gothic fiction has enthralled generations ever since, and has spawned countless interpretations by critics intrigued by its powerful symbolism. Sigmund Freud famously examined the novella in relation to his concept of the "e;Uncanny"e;, and an extract from this analysis is included in this volume.

Hoffmann, Der Sandmann, 1817. 1822 erkrankt E.T.A. Hoffmann schwer und diktiert - völlig gelähmt - vom Sterbebett aus die Erzählung »Des Vetters Eckfenster«, in der der große Romantiker sich dem kritischen Realismus annähert bevor er am 25. Juni in Berlin stirbt.
