The Mevlidi Sherif is one of the most commonly recited poems in the world today. Composed by the esteemed scholar and poet Süleyman Chelebi in the 14th century, this masterpiece of Turkish literature elegantly conveys the birth-story of the Prophet Muhammad, interweaving both the physical and spiritual dimensions of this narrative, gracefully reviving faith in the hearts of all who are privileged enough to listen. Venerated for over 600 years by the Muslims of Anatolia and the Balkans regardless of devotion, this classic poem continues to lend its treasures almost every day, both at times of festivity and sorrow. For some, it is celebrating the love of the Prophet, a source of inspiration and wisdom, while for others it is one of the few religious experiences connecting them to their Ottoman heritage, culture and identity. This edition features the only known English translation written almost a century ago, and is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about the sacred nativity of the Prophet Muhammad and the origins of His noble legacy. “The fact that the Mevlidi Sherif, as the finest expression of reverence for Muhammed, forms an essential part in the religious pattern of most Turkish minds, and that from its striking pictures and musical lines many Turks draw a large part of their stock of religious ideas, may give this poem interest and significance even for many who have little direct contact with the world of Islam. Remembering what the music of Christmas carols means to the Western world may help to an understanding of what the Turk experiences as he listens to the music of Süleyman Chelebi’s Mevlidi Sherif.” — F. When the Ottoman Turkish Empire was divided into modern states after World War I, in Turkey a change of alphabet and radical linguistic reform aimed to free modern Turkish literature from intellectual ties to the East. Holbrook recuperates Ottoman debates on the existential status of language and social value of art with a poetics of Beauty and Love, the philosophical fairy tale in verse by Seyh Galib. Where does language come from? How does a poet conceive imagery? What rights to interpretive authority does Muslim law accord the individual when God's word is law? Holbrook's lively analysis ranges an intertext of genres in Arabic and Persian as well as Turkish. The romance of separated lovers is a paradigm of journeys that lead beyond discourse. A poet's quest for originality reveals an archaeology of modernism. Holbrook traces the revolutionary polemic and Orientalist philology that de-aestheticized Ottoman poetry, bringing the critique of Orientalism to bear upon the Ottoman center Orientalism suppressed.

The Rise Of The Ottoman Empire written by Paul Wittek and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-20 with History categories.

Paul Wittek’s The Rise of the Ottoman Empire was first published by the Royal Asiatic Society in 1938 and has been out of print for more than a quarter of a century. The present reissue of the text also brings together translations of some of his other studies on Ottoman history; eight closely interconnected writings on the period from the founding of the state to the Fall of Constantinople and the reign of Mehmed II. Most of these pieces reproduces the texts of lectures or conference papers delivered by Wittek between 1936 and 1938 when he was teaching at Université Libré in Brussels, Belgium. The books or journals in which they were originally published are for the most part inaccessible except in specialist libraries, in a period when Wittek's activities as an Ottoman historian, in particular his formulations regarding the origins and subsequent history of the Ottoman state (the "Ghazi thesis"), are coming under increasing study within the Anglo-Saxon world of scholarship. An introduction by Colin Heywood sets Wittek's work in its historical and historiographical context for the benefit of those students who were not privileged to experience it firsthand. This reissue and recontextualizing of Wittek’s pioneering work on early Ottoman history makes a valuable contribution to the field and to the historiography of Asian and Middle Eastern history generally.

The Language of the Birds is a masterpiece of Eastern Turkish literature (now Uzbek), and was written by one of Central Asia’s most prominent poets, Alisher Nava’i, shortly before his death in 1501. The story begins with the birds of the world realizing they are far from their king and so they begin their arduous journey with the assistance of the wise bird Hoopoe as their guide. Hoopoe listens to their complaints and excuses along the way and encourages them to seek true life even though the journey is sometimes painful. This epic poem in prose form contains many anecdotes and stories from the oral history of the Silk Road and Islam. Through this story, people are exhorted to rise above any excuse they might have in their spiritual pilgrimage. Alisher Nava’i (1441-1501) is renowned in Central Asia for his numerous writings and lasting influence in Uzbekistan as well as the contemporary Central Asian republics. In modern Uzbekistan, Nava’i is revered above all other poets and his presence is still found – streets, museums, and even a province and city are name after him. His proverbs are found throughout Central Asia and he is considered the father of the Uzbek language. His words for peace and against oppression are as timely today as they were 5 centuries ago. Nava’i lived in Herat, Afghanistan. His writings, endowments, and his life example have had lasting influence in Central Asia. In The Language of the Birds, we are introduced to what Nava’i thought is important in life. It is a world of love that goes beyond the rational and is ready to endure anything for the beloved. This book is for anyone who values great historical literature, as well as those needing inspiration in his or her own pilgrimage in life.

Translating The Qur An In An Age Of Nationalism written by M. Brett Wilson and has been published by Qur'anic Studies this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Religion categories.

Over the course of the past two centuries, the central text of Islam has undergone twin revolutions. Around the globe, Muslim communities have embraced the printing and translating of the Qur'an, transforming the scribal text into a modern book that can be read in virtually any language. What began with the sparse and often contentious publication of vernacular commentaries and translations in South Asia and the Ottoman Empire evolved, by the late twentieth century, into widespread Qur'anic translation and publishing efforts in all quarters of the Muslim world, including Arabic speaking countries such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia. This is remarkable given that at the dawn of the twentieth century many Muslims considered Qur'an translations to be impermissible and unviable. Nevertheless, printed and translated versions of the Qur'an have gained widespread acceptance by Muslim communities, and now play a central, and in some quarters, a leading role in how the Qur'an is read and understood in the modern world. Focusing on the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, and following the debates to Russia, Egypt, Indonesia, and India, this book tries to answer the question of how this revolution in Qur'anic book culture occurred, considering both intellectual history as well the processes by which the Qur'an became a modern book that could be mechanically reproduced and widely owned.
