Los seres humanos nos "construimos" en el seno de la cultura y gracias a ella. La forma y los contenidos de nuestra subjetividad reflejan las condiciones de la cultura con la que nos hacemos sujetos singulares. Este principio, hoy asimilado universalmente, tiene implicaciones decisivas para la educación, la cual se apoya en un proyecto de individuo, de sociedad y de cultura deseables. Dos amarres nos conectan al mundo. Por un lado, la compleja red de relaciones, interdependencias y sentimientos que nos unen o separan de los demás. Por otro, la cultura que aporta la sustancia que nos alimenta, a través de la que nos expresamos, por la cual damos sentido al mundo y comprendemos a los otros y a nosotros mismos. La educación interviene en ambas formas de anclarnos, defendiendo determinadas opciones y orientaciones teleológicas. En vez de quedar presa de la cultura, debe orientar su desarrollo. En una sociedad caracterizada por la amplitud y profundidad de los procesos de globalización, nuestro mundo interior es mestizo, porque la cultura que nos rodea es fruto de un amplio proceso de hibridación. Esta condición "impura" del ser humano y de la cultura puede ser el punto de partida para confeccionar un renovado "texto cultural" para el currículum y una orientación adecuada para la práctica educativa y para el profesorado. En esta obra se pasa revista a esa condición "impura" de la cultura y de la subjetividad (de la identidad, por tanto. La cultura y la ciudadanía son en este libro las referencias de un discurso necesario, no demasiado frecuentado por la investigación educativa, para dar sentido al progreso de una sociedad que se encuentra sorprendida ante cambios de referencias para pensarse a sí misma y a la hora de dotarse democráticamente de una orientación.

En el mes de octubre de 2012, una serie de personas profesionalmente relacionadas con la educación, reconociéndose como miembros del Foro de Sevilla, se reunieron en la Universidad Pedro Olavide de esta ciudad, convocados por la profesora Carmen Rodríguez Martínez de la Universidad de Málaga y por José Gimeno Sacristán de la Universidad de Valencia con el propósito de llegar a un acuerdo en el dignóstico y formas de abordar los problemas que presenta nuestra realidad educativa. Consideramos que debíamos realizar algún tipo de pronunciamiento sobre el sistema educativo, sometido, de nuevo, a otra agitación política, social y pedagógica, provocada por la publicación del proyecto de la Ley Orgánica para la Mejora de la Calidad de la Educación (LOMCE), presentado por el gobierno del Partido Popular. Reconociendo la legitimidad de este gobierno para desarrollar la política educativa que le garantiza su mayoría parlamentaria, no queremos dejar pasar este momento sin dar respuesta al citado proyecto, analizando las consecuencias que va a tener para la educación, pues se trata de una reforma que altera sustancialmente las bases de las educación que se ha venido construyendo, que socava la importancia que tiene la educación pública para una sociedad integradora y que presenta una serie de medidas que, pretendidamente, están dirigidas a la mejora de la calidad de la educación, cuando algunas de ellas van a deteriorarla en realidad. Como profesionales de la educación queremos hacer públicas algunas consideraciones, aportar datos y argumentos, así como señalar vías para abordar soluciones a problemas que sobrepasan el ámbito de la acción de los gobiernos y que han de proyectarse a medio y largo plazo.
