In the first month the animals were maintained on the full level of concentrate feeding and there after a monthly reduction of eight percent in the concentrate requirement based on the prevailing milk yield was effected the rest of the requirements were made available from roughages. For the complete lactation the average dairy milk yield per animal was 8.85 kg and 5.47 kg and the average total milk yield was 1598 kg and 1493 kg for tharparkar and sahiwal cows respectively The average total fat production per animal per day and for the complete lactation was 0.28 kg and 77.07 kg in tharparkar and 0.25 kg and 68.79 kg in sahiwal cows. The total solids in milk showed an increase where SNF content decreases with increase in concentrates. THe calcium phosphorus and magnecium content of milk remained constant throughout the lactation period. The average value of TDN intake through concentrate/total TDN intake being significantly less with increasing levels of concentrate reduction showed that the TDN intake from roughage increased to meet the total requirements as the TDN intake from concentrate went down the average value of TDN intake from concentrate/four percent fat arrected milk fallowing the same trend as above showed that progressing lesser amount of TDN was supplied from concentrate mixture per unit of four percent fat corrected milk produced as the concentrate reduction and lactation progressed. The average value of total TDN intake/four percent concentrate reduction and increased with increased level of concentrate reduction. The average calcium phosphorus and magnesium intake per day decreased with the increasing levels of concentrate reduction but the dairy balances of these elements were positive throughout the experimental period.

This book presents strategies for feeding energy and protein supplements to pasture-fed dairy cows and examines the potential economic benefits. Effective supplementary feeding of concentrates is critical to the success of all dairy farms. This book is a substantially revised edition of 'Feeding Concentrates: Supplements for Dairy Cows' DRDC 1993. It focuses on feeding concentrates to pasture fed cows to achieve high milk production per cow per hectare, and will assist farmers to decide which supplements give the best results in their particular situation. The benefits that arise from supplementary feeding include higher stocking rates, promotion of growth in heifers and young cows; better body condition score and increased lactation length when pasture is less available; improved pasture use; reduced cost per tonne of pasture eaten; flexibility to increase milk production when milk prices are high; and increased milk protein content when the energy content in pasture is low. This edition has thoroughly reviewed the issues and clearly documents the results of research particularly for grains supplementation. The summaries and recommendations in each chapter will be particularly helpful to dairy farmers in making best management decisions relating to concentrate feeding.
