Das Wörterbuch als Produkt von Kultur - dies ist der Ausgangspunkt der Studie, die neun allgemeine einsprachige Wörterbücher des Englischen (COD, OALD, LDOCE, COBUILD) und des Französischen (NPR, PL, LEXIS, MR, DFColl) in ihrem gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Kontext untersucht. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, inwieweit Methoden der Lexikographie als kulturell determiniert beschrieben werden können. Es wird empirisch untersucht, ob sich systematische Unterschiede in der Konzeption der Bauteile und Strukturen von Wörterbüchern verschiedener "Wörterbuchlandschaften" feststellen lassen, und inwieweit solche Unterschiede im soziokulturellen Entstehungsumfeld der Wörterbücher begründet sein könnten. Die Arbeit konzentriert sich auf Selektion, Markierungsangaben, Definitionen, Artikelbaupläne und lexikographische Beispiele. Diese werden in Beziehung gesetzt zu Spracheinstellungen, zu den gesellschaftlichen Aufgaben der Lexikographie, zu sprachwissenschaftlichen Theorien und vorwissenschaftlichen Traditionen der Sprachbetrachtung sowie zu unterschiedlichen Bedingungen auf dem Wörterbuchmarkt. Es ergeben sich signifikante Parallelen zwischen den Strukturen der Wörterbücher und soziokulturellen Parametern, die jedoch mit der nötigen Differenziertheit interpretiert werden müssen: Lexikographische Texte sollten als komplexe Produkte aus lexikographischen Traditionen, Einflüssen des aktuellen kulturellen Umfelds und Anpassungen an die Erfordernisse des Marktes betrachtet werden.
