A los alemanes les falta la facilidad que hace de una palabra una designación simple y cómoda, respecto de la cual se pongan de acuerdo sin grandes dificultades. Es verdad que para nosotros una expresión se vuelve rápidamente banal, pero no sencillamente convencional en un sentido práctico y razonable. Lo que permanece como denominación objetiva más allá del momento y exige por eso un análisis más exhaustivo, trae consigo ambigüedades y disputas lingüísticas; y quien busca en medio del caos una explicación objetiva, pronto nota que está envuelto en una conversación eterna y en una cháchara inútil. El tema romanticismo sugiere tales reflexiones no solo a nosotros los alemanes; en la discusión francesa, inglesa e italiana la confusión no es menor. No obstante, también aquí se siente la facilidad terminológica del idioma francés y se podría intentar imitarla. ¿No sería más simple decir aproximadamente así: romanticismo es todo lo que puede derivarse psicológica o intelectualmente de la creencia en la bonté naturelle, es decir, del principio de que el hombre es bueno por naturaleza? Esta definición —establecida por los franceses y en apariencia particularmente evidente para ellos—da efectivamente un criterio adecuado para numerosos fenómenos románticos y puede aplicarse también a breves estados de ánimo y sucesos cotidianos.
