Groucho Marx Julius Henry Marx va néixer el 1895 a la ciutat de Nova York. Fill d’un modest sastre alemany d’origen jueu, va crear amb els seus germans «Chico» (Leonard, 1891-1961), «Harpo» (Arthur, 1893-1964), «Gummo» (Milton, 1894-1977) i «Zeppo» (Herbert, 1901-79) un grup de varietats comicomusicals de gran popularitat. Amb ells va fer per al cinema una sèrie de films d’un humor disbauxat i enginyós que esdevindria un gènere irrepetible. D’aquest període són les seves pel·lícules: «The Cocoanuts» (1929), «Monkey Business» (1931), «Duck Soup» (1933), «A Night at the Opera» (1935), «A Day at the Races» (1936), «Room Service» (1938), «At the Circus» (1938), «Go West» (1940) i «Love Happy» (1948). Al teatre, amb obres com «Time for Elizabeth» (1948), a la ràdio, amb programes com «Pabst Blue Ribbon Town» (1943), i a la televisió amb «You Bet your life» (1947), va aconseguir èxits que el van mantenir com un referent universal. Va morir l’any 1977.
