Más que “enseñar a investigar” -esto es algo que sólo se aprende en la práctica misma y en la medida en que profundizamos en nuestras disciplinas específicas-, la lectura de los relatos sobre Sherlock Holmes genera en el lector atento una reflexión en torno al sentido, el proceso, los métodos, las estrategias, entre otro. de la investigación científica. A partir de él se podremos realizar, entonces, un examen del oficio de investigador, podremos ver cómo se hace ciencia y, a la vez, podremos suscitar una reflexión sobre cómo nosotros mismos podríamos hacerla. La utilización de un modelo literario como éste tiene una serie de ventajas. Además de que los relatos sherlockianos son de muy agradable lectura, se propicia a través de ellos una introducción narrativa a los problemas claves de la investigación, que podríamos y deberíamos confrontar con visiones alternativas de lo que constituye una lógica de la investigación científica. Los relatos policíacos de Sir Arthur Conan Doyle constituyen una literatura de un elevado nivel de reflexión teórica, dado que Sherlock Holmes es un personaje que, a la vez que construye un oficio propio, el de investigador, va reflexionando continuamente sobre dicho oficio y sobre la práctica investigativa en general; sobre todo, hay una poderosa “lógica de la investigación científica” implícita, y muchas veces explícita, en estos textos.

Information Text: In the early modern period, numerous texts deal with professions by presenting the knowledge required in each case, individual fields of activity, purpose, origin and prestige. The course of argumentation is humanistic, insofar as it mostly starts from the human being. The ancient idea of the primacy of mental work over manual work is formative here. The importance of Spain results from the fact that the Spanish king Charles V was both emperor and ruler of the colonies in America, i.e. he ruled a world empire by the standards of the time. After discussing some central categories, overall representations of knowledge, professions, and prominent professional representatives are presented. Here, the hierarchization and its relativization by satire is revealing. The mechanical arts and the artes liberales are then presented on the basis of individual professions selected as characteristic examples, each with its own specific knowledge. The higher faculties of medicine, theology and jurisprudence with their representatives form the conclusion.

Studies of prehistoric exchange of goods provide information about the types of economic interaction, social organization, or political structures in which prehistoric peoples were engaged. Long-distance exchange is a special situation where the materials exchanged crossed significant boundaries, whether they were geographic, social, political, or otherwise. By examining the types and quantities of goods exchanged, along with the directions and distances they moved, archaeologists are able to examine the dynamic properties of exchange systems, i.e., how they operate and why they undergo change. The purpose of this volume is to present a number of case studies of long-distance exchange from around the world which demonstrate the use of geochemical analysis of artifacts to find evidence of exchange. More important than the use of analytical technique employed or the types of artifacts studied are the interpretations themselves which illustrate that exchange studies are maturing and helping archaeologists to develop more accurate models of exchange.
