En 1930, el poeta y crítico literario dominicano Max Henríquez Ureña, en su ensayo El retorno de los galeones, indagaba acerca del origen de la influencia de la literatura hispanoamericana en los escritores europeos y, más concretamente, en los autores españoles. Las investigaciones presentadas en el Coloquio Internacional del Centre de Recherches sur l'Amérique Ibérique et l'Europe (Créamé) de la Universidad de Lieja el 11 y 12 de diciembre de 2008, recogidas en estas actas, constituyen un conjunto de respuestas originales sobre el tema, al relacionarlo con el viaje de América a Europa de personas, productos, conceptos y formas culturales, que abarcarían del barroco al tango, de la implicación latinoamericana en las guerras mundiales a las relaciones literarias, de inmigraciones a imágenes políticas. Así reunidas, las reflexiones que el lector encontrará en este libro van más allá de las divisiones disciplinarias impuestas por las tradiciones académicas, en la medida en que se vinculan con los campos de la historia, de la antropología y de los estudios literarios y culturales. Esta diversidad de miradas muestra, por tanto, el carácter poco uniforme de este movimiento de retorno, sugiriendo con ello la complejidad todavía latente en los viajes que hasta hoy en día siguen conectando ambos lados del Océano.

This work, the fruit of intense research work spanning several years, examines the first serious attempt by the descendants of the Sephardim—the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492—to “return to Sepharad” more than three decades after the abolition of the Inquisition. At the beginning of the nineteenth century a trend towards historical revisionism, backed by Liberals, whose influence was pivotal at the Cortes de Cádiz (the national assembly convened to assert Spanish sovereignty, introduce reform, and establish a modern Spanish nation), combined with economic factors, culminated in the abolition of the Inquisition in 1834. This paved the way, ideologically, for the freedom of worship to be proclaimed in Spain on the heels of La Septembrina, or La Gloriosa, the September Revolution of 1868 in which Queen Isabel II was deposed. European Sephardic Jews, galvanized by their perception of a tolerant Spain, decided to undertake a major project to initiate negotiations with the Spanish state.

Peter Wade explores the history of música tropical, analyzing its rise in the context of the development of the broadcast media, rapid urbanization, and regional struggles for power. Using archival sources and oral histories, Wade shows how big band renditions of cumbia and porro in the 1940s and 1950s suggested both old traditions and new liberties, especially for women, speaking to a deeply rooted image of black music as sensuous. Recently, nostalgic, "whitened" versions of música tropical have gained popularity as part of government-sponsored multiculturalism. Wade's fresh look at the way music transforms and is transformed by ideologies of race, nation, sexuality, tradition, and modernity is the first book-length study of Colombian popular music.
