Signals intelligence (SIGINT), or the collection of intelligence by the interception of communications or monitoring of other electronic signals, is the most productive source of intelligence available to governments and their defence establishments. In the Asia-Pacific region, there are moves to greater defence self-reliance. Throughout the region there has been a significant expansion of SIGNIT capabilities and operations over the past decade, and this is expected to continue over the foreseeable future. Signals Intelligence in the Post-Cold War Era describes these recent developments in global and regional SIGINT capabilities and operations, and provides some explanation for their developments.

Of German stock dating back to 1530 in Saxony, Eric George Ackermann GM was born on the Isle of Wight in 1919 and became a leading figure in the world of signals and electronic intelligence. As a Junior Scientific Officer at the Telecommunication Research Establishment, Boscombe Down, with an honorary commission in the Royal Air Force, he made numerous flights over occupied territory searching for, monitoring and destroying Germany's Wuerzburg, Knickebein and X Band radar systems. Much of his research was passed to the highest levels of wartime government, and was highly prized, ensuring that tactical plans could be executed that took full advantage of known, top secret German intelligence.??A host of secret missions to assess the enemy's radar capabilities were carried out in North Africa, Gibraltar and Italy. This new and engaging biography explores the various highs and lows of his operational deployment at the vanguard of tactical intelligence operations in these exciting theaters of war. Winner of the George Medal for conspicuous gallantry, his efforts weren't confined to the offices of war. He saw conflict up close and personal, and was therefore aware of the urgency of his endeavours, and the extent to which his findings made a difference.??The end of the war was a cause of great celebration, but it did not signal the end of Ackermann's role, far from it. He was to play a major part in the setting up and implementation of a string of listening stations built along the borders of Soviet Bloc countries which were destined to glean a wealth of invaluable post-war intelligence. Further work in aeronautics and satellite construction in the States followed, meaning the reach of Ackermann's influence could be allowed to stretch yet further.rnrnYet despite the might and scale of his achievement, he has never before been the subject of a book-length study. The authors, Peter Jackson and David Haysom, have made every effort to rectify that in this new publication which is sure to appeal to aviation enthusiasts, as well as the more general reader curious to gain new insights into twentieth century intelligence practices and their often far-reaching consequences.

Classification And Analysis Of Low Probability Of Intercept Radar Signals Using Image Processing written by Christer Persson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-09-01 with categories.

The characteristic of low probability of intercept (LPI) radar makes it difficult to intercept with conventional signal intelligence methods so new interception methods need to be developed. This thesis initially describes a simulation of a polytime phase-coded LPI signal. The thesis then introduces a method for classification of LPI radar signals. The method utilizes a parallel tree structure with three separate 'branches' to exploit the image representation formed by three separate detection methods. Each detection method output is pre-processed and features are extracted using image processing. After processing the images, they are each fed into three separate neural networks to be classified. The classification output of each neural network is then combined and fed into a fourth neural network performing the final classification. The outcome of testing shows only 53%, which might be the result of the image representation of the detection methods not being distinct enough, the pre - processing/feature extraction not being able to extract relevant information or the neural networks not being properly trained. The thesis concludes with a brief discussion about a suitable method for image processing to extract significant parameters from a LPI signal.

"This comprehensive book presents LPI radar design essentials, including ambiguity analysis of LPI waveforms, FMCW radar, and phase-shift and frequency-shift keying techniques. Moreover, you find details on new OTHR modulation schemes, noise radar, and spatial multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The book explores autonomous non-linear classification signal processing algorithms for identifying LPI modulations. It also demonstrates four intercept receiver signal processing techniques for LPI radar detection that helps you determine which time-frequency, bi-frequency technique best suits any LPI modulation of interest."--Publisher.

A comprehensive & authoritative history of the CIA's manned overhead reconnaissance program (MORP), which from 1954 to 1974 developed & operated 2 extraordinary aircraft, the U-2 & the A-12 OXCART. Describes not only the program's technological & bureaucratic aspects, but also its political & international context. The MORP, along with other overhead systems that emerged from it, changed the CIA's work & structure in ways that were both revolutionary & permanent. The formation of the Directorate of S&T in the 1960s, principally to develop & direct reconnaissance programs, is the most obvious legacy of the events in this study.

Presents the theories and applications of determining the position of an object in space through the use of satellites As the importance of space reconnaissance technology intensifies, more and more countries are investing money in building their own space reconnaissance satellites. Due to the secrecy and sensitivity of the operations, it is hard to find published papers and journals on the topic outside of military and governmental agencies. This book aims to fill the gap by presenting the various applications and basic principles of a very modern technology. The space electronic reconnaissance system in mono/multi-satellite platforms is a critical feature which can be used for detection, localization, tracking or identification of the various kinds of signal sources from radar, communication or navigation systems. Localization technology in space electronic reconnaissance uses single or multiple satellite receivers which receive signals from radar, communication and navigation emitters in the ground, ocean and space to specify the location of emitter. The methods, principles and technologies of different space electronic reconnaissance localization systems are introduced in this book, as are their performances, and the various methods are explained and analysed. Digital simulations illustrate the results. Presents the theories and applications of determining the position of an object in space through the use of satellites Introduces methods, principles and technologies of localization and tracking in the space electronic reconnaissance system, the localization algorithm and error in satellite system and near space platform system, and the tracking algorithm and error in single satellite-to-satellite tracking system Provides the fundamentals, the mathematics, the limitations, the measurements, and systems, of localization with emphasis on defence industry applications Highly relevant for Engineers working in avionics, radar, communication, navigation and electronic warfare. Chapters include:- the introduction of space electronic reconnaissance localization technology, knowledge about the satellite orbit and basic terminology of passive localization, single satellite geolocation technology based on direction finding, three-satellite geolocation technology based on time difference of arrival (TDOA), two-satellite geolocation technology based on TDOA and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA), the single satellite localization technology based on kinematics theory, localization principles of near-space platform electronic reconnaissance systems, the orbit determination of single satellite-to-satellite tracking using bearings only(BO) information, the orbit determination of single satellite-to-satellite tracking using bearings and frequency information, the orbit determination of single satellite-to-satellite tracking using frequency only(FO) information. Each chapter ends with a problem and solution section, some using Matlab code.
