Excerpt from Elementary Logic With Special Application, to Methods of Teaching This book is designed primarily for students in normal and training schools. Throughout its pages the bearings of logic upon the problems of education have been constantly kept in mind. The relation between certain phases of logic and the teacher's classroom work has been emphasized. While the interests of the future teacher have received especial attention, the subject-matter is so arranged that the pedagogical applications may be ignored, thus adapting the book for use in colleges. When used in this way, all of Part VI may be omitted. The writer believes that a text-book in logic should have two aims: first, to preserve the fundamental principles of formal logic; second, to bring the logical doctrine into harmony with the recent developments of functional psychology. The psychological creed adhered to throughout the book is frankly genetic, and the developmental conception is in evidence in the treatment of topics, notably Judgment, the Functional Value of Reasoning, and the Fallacies. The traditional connections between logic and language have been reiterated, in the belief that they are fundamental and that they furnish a valuable apperceptive basis for the introduction of the subject to students fresh from the study of languages. And if by a definition all that is meant is a vague general statement of aim or purpose, that is easy to give; the aim Of Logic, always and every where, is to' study the difference between good and bad reasoning. Even the loftiest and least mundane kind Of Logic cannot really escape from this purpose; for what interest could there be in ideally perfect truths if no one was ever in the least danger of forgetting them? It was the liability of mankind to reason badly that first called Logic into existence, and that still makes the study worth while; and to confess its lack Of power to detect bad reasoning, or to boast of a lack Of interest in doing this, would be fatal to its claims. The general aim Of Logic, then, is clear. But real difficulties begin as soon as we try to get the scope and method of the Science into its definition, for thereby we run'a risk Of begging the very important ques tion whether a particular limitation of scope, or a particular method, is a help or a hindrance in achieving the aim. There is no general agreement on this point. Indeed that is a mild way of putting it, for we live' in times when there is a widespread and growing revolt against certain Old methods and Old limitations Of Logic which have come. It has been published in the hope of removing some of the difficulties which handicap the average student. We trust that the language is simple and definite and that the illustrative exercises and diagrams may be helpful in making clear some of the more abstruse topics. If a speedy review for examination is necessary, it is recommended that the briefer course as outlined on page 493 be followed and that the summaries closing each chapter be carefully read. Only the fundamentals of deductive and inductive logic have received attention. Moreover emphasis has been given to those phases which appear to commend themselves because of their practical value. Further than this we trust that the book may fulfill in some small way the larger mission of inspiring better thinking and, in consequence, of leading to a more serviceable citizenship.
