This comprehensive biography of Eduardo René Chibás (1907–1951) traces the life and times of Cuba’s most popular and charismatic politician during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Chibás, whose admirers included young Fidel Castro, emphasized honesty in Cuban public life and promised to sweep away corrupt politicians during his popular Sunday broadcasts. His ties with supporters, many of whom knew him simply as “Eddy,” were closer and more informal than any previous Cuban politician. During his 1948 presidential campaign, Chibás often hurled himself into the arms of adoring supporters after speeches. Such gestures were met with wonder and disgust by politicians more accustomed to buying votes than winning hearts. His suicide in 1951 dashed the dreams of his followers—who hoped he would deliver an honest government that provided services for the island’s poor and respected Cuba’s progressive 1940 constitution. His death, which was followed seven months hence by a military coup and eight years later by Castro’s revolution, represents one of the great what ifs of Cuban politics. This seminal work explores Chibás’s life in order to explain the nature of Cuban politics from the mid-twentieth century to today.

Difference and Division in Music Education enriches existing diversity and social justice discourses by considering the responsibility of music education to respond to rising social discord and tensions. Although ‘hate’ is by no means a new concern for policymakers, educators, or musicians, the climate of fast communications, divisive politics, and intensified encounters with ‘difference’ has framed expressions of hate as a rising social problem to which we cannot afford complacency. This edited volume of ten contributed essays approaches ‘hate’ not as a monstrous aberration, but as a product of late modernity entangled within the complex power-relations that frame both governance and agency at the policy, institutional, and interpersonal levels. Nuestras pretensiones en esta investigación se centran en analizar las mediaciones laborales desde la perspectiva de la pragmalingüística, si bien es cierto que para delimitar el terreno propio de este género discursivo hacemos un estudio comparativo de los juicios, los arbitrajes, las conciliaciones y las mediaciones, en este último caso abordamos también las mediaciones educativas en contextos interculturales. Para llevar a cabo este análisis ofrecemos un capítulo introductorio donde tratamos el conflicto, así como una aclaración sobre los géneros extrajudiciales de resolución de conflictos, haciendo hincapié en las mediaciones. A continuación, ofrecemos un repaso diacrónico de estos géneros (anexo 1). Del mismo modo, aportamos un estado de la cuestión comentando algunos trabajos que se han realizado sobre este tema cuya base sea lingüística, en particular, o bien comunicativa, en general. En el apartado de fundamentación teórica incluimos la descripción del marco comunicativo, puesto que en los distintos géneros analizados nos encontramos con una estructura triádica, en lugar de los clásicos estudios binarios que habitualmente han sido descritos en las investigaciones sobre comunicación.
