School dropout remains a persistent and critical issue in many school systems, so much so that it is sometimes referred to as a crisis. Populations across the globe have come to depend on success at school for establishing careers and gaining access to post-school qualifications. Yet large numbers of young people are excluded from the advantages that successful completion of school brings and as a result are subjected to consequences such as higher likelihood of unemployment, lower earnings, greater dependence on welfare and poorer physical health and well-being. Over recent decades, most western nations have stepped up their efforts to reduce drop out and raise school completion rates while maintaining high standards. How school systems have approached this, and how successful they are, varies. This book compares the various approaches by evaluating their impact on rates of dropout and completion. Case studies of national systems are used to highlight the different approaches including institutional arrangements and the various alternative secondary school programs and their outcomes. The evaluation is based on several key questions: What are the main approaches? How do they work? For whom do they work? And, how successful are they in promoting high rates of completion and equivalent outcomes for all? This book examines the nature of the dropout problem in advanced industrialized countries with the goal of developing a broader, international understanding that can feed into public policy to help improve completion rates worldwide.

This book rejects the idea that natural resource industries are doomed to slow growth. Rather, it examines the case of Norway to demonstrate that such industries can prove highly innovative and dynamic. Here, the case is compellingly made that a key empirical problem with the popular ‘resource curse’ argument is that some of the richest countries in the world – namely Norway, Sweden, Canada and Australia – have all developed fast-growing economies based on natural resources. Universal schooling in Norway was originated in 1793 by a Lutheran priest with an aim to achieve a greater readership of the Holy Book. Higher education during the 19th and 20th centuries can be traced to two other forces: firstly, education was seen as a vehicle to strengthen a poor nation with a scattered population and a history of national inferiority; and secondly, education in Norway, along with the growing labour movement, was recognized as a way of reducing injustice in society. These attitudes resulted in an education system almost devoid of the differences engendered by the classic sociological variables of gender, social class and geographical location. Norway had, it seemed, achieved what the post-war Norwegian welfare state strove for - equity in education.

This volume presents a mix of translations of classical and modern papers from the German Didaktik tradition, newly prepared essays by German scholars and practitioners writing from within the tradition, and interpretive essays by U.S. scholars. It brings this tradition, which virtually dominated German curricular thought and teacher education until the 1960s when American curriculum theory entered Germany--and which is now experiencing a renaissance--to the English-speaking world, where it has been essentially unknown. The intent is to capture in one volume the core (at least) of the tradition of Didaktik and to communicate its potential relevance to English-language curricularists and teacher educators. It introduces a theoretical tradition which, although very different in almost every respect from those we know, offers a set of approaches that suggest ways of thinking about problems of reflection on curricular and teaching praxis (the core focus of the tradition) which the editors believe are accessible to North American readers--with appropriate "translation." These ways of thinking and related praxis are very relevant to notions such as reflective teaching and the discourse on teachers as professionals. By raising the possibility that the "new" tradition of Didaktik can be highly suggestive for thinking through issues related to a number of central ideas within contemporary discourse--and for exploring the implications of these ideas for both teacher education and for a curriculum theory appropriate to these new contexts for theorizing, this book opens up a gold mine of theoretical and practical possibilities.

Historien om Einar Høigård, den eneste universitetetslæreren som mistet livet i kampen mot okkupasjonsmakten. Det skulle ikke gå lang tid fra den tyske okkupasjonen av Norge var et faktum til skolefolk ble beordret til å stille seg lojale overfor en nasjonalsosialistisk nyordning av skolen. Det oppstod strid mellom den tyske okkupasjonsmakten og Nasjonal Samling på den ene side, og lærere som ikke uten videre var villige til å tjene nazistene på den annen side. Det var lektoren og historikeren Einar Høigård som trakk opp de politiske linjene for de norske lærernes motstandskamp. Han ledet aksjonsutvalg, utarbeidet paroler, skrev illegale aviser og fungerte som en omreisende rådgiver for skolefolk. Hans virksomhet var av særlig betydning for de strategiske valgene som ble foretatt i sivile motstandsgrupperinger på utdanningsfeltet de første årene under okkupasjonen. For ikke å avsløre sine mange kontakter i hjemmefronten, tok han sitt liv under tysk fangenskap i november 1943.
