Evaluation is increasingly important for finding sustainable solutions for the people and the planet, based on a systematic analysis of what works, for whom, and under what circumstances, and to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, as they pertain to the environment. This book explores why the Global Environment Facility (GEF) invests in evaluation for accountability and learning to inform its decision-making on programming priorities, and how this leads to wiser funding decisions and better program performance on the ground. The book is based on real-life experiences of how to make evaluation count for international environmental action. Drawing upon comprehensive evaluations of the GEF, it provides unique insights from authors responsible for designing, implementing, and disseminating the findings of the evaluations. No other multilateral development or environment agency places evaluation fully at the center of their decision-making. The book outlines the trends in the global environment and the changing landscape of international environmental finance. It defines the role of the GEF and explains its institutional framework and the unique partnership that involves donor and recipient countries, multilateral development banks, UN agencies, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and national agencies in the developing countries. Further, it provides useful pointers to other organizations wishing to enhance evidence-based decision-making for improving their relevance, performance, and impact. The book will be most suitable for graduate-level, specialized study in a variety of disciplines such as environmental and development economics, political science, international relations, geography, sociology, and social anthropology. Urban Management Program Series Paper 14. A recent evaluation of urban research in developing countries noted that scant data are available on the urban environment, as little research has been done on the topic. This first volume in a two-volume set describes the development of a three-step evaluation process whereby data are collected and analyzed to support the involvement of stakeholders, suggests future directions and improvements, and summarizes results from use of the approach in selected cities. The second of a two- volume set (see below) contains tools that practitioners and researchers can apply directly in the field. See also Volume 2 (ISBN 0-8213-2791-7) Stock No. 12791.

Here are the tools and skills needed to conduct meaningful, comprehensive evaluations How do we know if a conservation education or outreach program is working? Practical Evaluation for Conservation Education and Outreach: Assessing Impacts & Enhancing Effectiveness presents a simple approach to using evaluation to design, monitor and assess education and outreach. It is for anyone whose organization or work involves creating educational programs designed to raise conservation awareness and promote pro-conservation behaviors. Even more than a how-to book, it can help you to build your organization’s capacity to conduct meaningful, comprehensive evaluations. The book’s purpose is to provide specific skills and knowledge that they can immediately put to use in conducting evaluation studies of conservation education programs. The reader will build an understanding that: - Evaluation yields useful information - Evaluation should be a part of a program’s design process - Evaluation can be a positive experience - Evaluation contributes to conservation education and outreach program’s success The reader will build their knowledge of: - Key evaluation terms and concepts - The relationship between evaluation and research - How evaluation processes and finding can contribute to decision making - The strengths and weaknesses of different evaluation approaches and data collection methods - The relationship among a program’s goals, objective, activities and expected outcomes The readers will be able to - Develop and refine key evaluation questions - Review and contribute to an evaluation plan - Construct and improve data-collection instruments - Collect credible and reliable data - Interpret results and draw conclusions This book provides practical advice on conducting evaluation that is specific for conservation professionals. Case studies describe how evaluation has led to program improvements in a range of conservation settings. Evaluating Environmental and Social Impact Assessment in Developing Countries is a valuable reference book for practitioners and researchers conducting research in and developing studies on environmental science and management and environmental and social impact assessment. The book’s authors have developed and tested a new framework to evaluate environmental impact assessment (EIA) systems that may be adopted by most developing countries with EIA experience. Application of this framework will help determine if the EIA is achieving its intended goal of sustainable development in these countries. It also explains the reasons behind the strengths and weaknesses from which the development practitioners and international development partners can take lessons. This book will help the reader answer such questions as "What are the best forms of public participation?" and "How do we measure contributions to EIA procedure?" since it is based on direct experiences from a developing country that is struggling with many of these issues. Evaluating Environmental and Social Impact Assessment in Developing Countries provides further understanding of appropriate tools to evaluate environmental and social impacts of development initiatives especially in developing countries. Demonstrates the development of an integrated holistic method that presents new research in the field Offers a thorough analytical assessment of an EIA system in a developing country Presents valuable insights into how developing countries are coping with the new phenomenon of public participation and involvement in environmental decision making and what methods and techniques have been successful Includes a chapter on social impact assessment in developing countries with special focus on Bangladesh, providing valuable information applicable to developing countries

As the nature of the field of environment-behavior relations is interdis ciplinary, the collaboration of three persons of diverse professional backgrounds in writing this book is therefore not surprising. This col laboration started in 1972 with the offering of a graduate seminar "Envi ronment, Behavior, and Design Evaluation" at the University of Massa chusetts. Several research projects dealing with design evaluation which have been conducted at the University are also included as case studies in this book (Chapter III): the ELEMR study and the Visitor Center study. Two of the authors have worked as part of the instructional team in the seminar, and all of the authors have participated in varying degrees in the ELEMR Project. The authors' backgrounds in design, psychology, and landscape architecture suggest, by example, that professionals with diverse backgrounds but a common interest in environment-behavior problems can indeed learn to communicate and to collaborate. Since design evaluation is a new field and very little specific litera ture on the subject exists to date, we hope this book fills a current need.
