Los libertos de la Hispania romana se enmarcan dentro de un estudio articulado para su contribución a la sociedad hispanorromana. Para su análisis, se han utilizado las fuentes literarias y epigráficas que, a lo largo de un proceso cronológico amplio (desde finales de la República hasta finales del siglo III d. C.), contribuyeron a esclarecer el papel que tuvieron, a veces, dentro del ámbito romano. Nuestro interés y objetivo es analizar todos aquellos aspectos que las fuentes antiguas escritas han proporcionado. La monografía se divide en cuatro partes: la primera, la situación jurídica y el estado personal de los libertos hispanos hasta el momento en que el emperador Caracalla concede la ciudadanía romana a todos los habitantes del Imperio. Hay indicadores para detectar a los libertos en la documentación escrita, de ahí que llevemos a cabo una selección epigráfica. Además, la procedencia de los libertos y su situación jurídica son aspectos que conforman el marco ideal de este grupo social y, por tanto, la sociedad hispana se organizó en función de la categoría jurídica de las personas, que tras ser liberadas, pasaban a libres, pero sometidas a algunas restricciones jurídicas. Por tanto, el estado personal y las relaciones familiares indican que tuvieron enormes dificultades para integrarse en los grupos sociales de las sociedades hispanas, aunque algunos —muy pocos— llegaron a conseguir a través del matrimonio una mejor posición social. La segunda parte corresponde a la situación social y económica de los libertos hispanos. El esclavo manumitido presenta cierta igualdad con el ingenuus, sui iuris, que se manifiesta mejor en los libertos imperiales al disponer de unos «privilegios» por formar parte de la domus imperial. Se tiene constancia de ejemplos de libertos que llegaron a alcanzar un estadio que les permitió escapar del silencio, al que les llevaba su propia condición. La situación socio-económica, las relaciones con sus antiguos propietarios, la duración de su matrimonio, los hijos ilegítimos, la adopción legal y los tipos de relaciones laborales son aspectos que acreditan, en alguna medida, el modo de vida y la ubicación social de los libertos hispanos. La tercera parte, la promoción social y política de los imperiales, públicos y augustales llegaron a formar un sector específico. La heterogeneidad y complejidad es producto de su vinculación con la familia Caesaris. Los libertos imperiales conforman la élite de este colectivo al estar encargados de controlar todas las actividades de la casa imperial. La vida social y pública de los libertos imperiales, de los públicos y los privados les permitió acceder a puestos que, en principio, les estaban vedados. La cuarta parte, el mundo religioso de los libertos que, como es habitual y de forma individual, son los encargados de elegir el monumento votivo para dedicárselo a la divinidad. Uno de los ámbitos en los que los libertos pudieron gozar de un importante protagonismo, fue sin duda en el marco de la religión romana, debido a su determinante carácter político-social y cuyo principal contenido se reflejaba en el espacio público a través de la materialización de actos cultuales. Los cultos tradicionales, las divinidades augustas, las divinidades orientales, las divinidades prerromanas y el evergetismo religioso y civil de los libertos son manifestaciones de su integración de la vida religiosa en las ciudades hispanas.
