Aunque la sublevación de Rafael del Riego, que se produjo el 1 de enero de 1820, no tuvo el éxito que los conjurados habían esperado, la revolución se extendió por todas partes, hasta el punto de que Fernando VII hubo de jurar nuevamente la Constitución de 1812. Entre otros ecos de aquellos hechos ha llegado hasta nosotros todavía la canción "Trágala", que mostraba la satisfacción de los liberales por haber obligado a los absolutistas a aceptar sus postulados. Fue el comienzo del Trienio Liberal. En la novela de Galdós se narran los sucesos que condujeron a él. Sus personajes encarnan las figuras del momento histórico: el guerrillero que ha luchado contra los franceses, el absolutista convencido, el arribista, el liberal, etc.
