The Sacrament of Penance and Religious Life in Golden Age Spain explores the practice of sacramental confession in Spain between roughly 1500 and 1700. One of the most significant points of contact between the laity and ecclesiastical hierarchy, confession lay at the heart of attempts to bring religious reformation to bear upon the lives of early modern Spaniards. Rigid episcopal legislation, royal decrees, and a barrage of prescriptive literature lead many scholars to construct the sacrament fundamentally as an instrument of social control foisted upon powerless laypeople. Drawing upon a wide range of early printed and archival materials, this book considers confession as both a top-down and a bottom-up phenomenon. Rather than relying solely upon prescriptive and didactic literature, it considers evidence that describes how the people of early modern Spain experienced confession, offering a rich portrayal of a critical and remarkably popular component of early modern religiosity.

ERASMO, (1467-1536), naci� en Rotterdam e ingres� en la orden de los Agustinos. Sin embargo, gracias a la protecci�n del obispo de Cambrai, fue autorizado a salir del claustro y viajar por Europa. Sus principales obras fueron una edici�n en griego del Nuevo Testamento (1516), seguida de una par�frasis en lat�n; el "Elogio de la locura" (1511) y "El manual del caballero cristiano", que fue traducido al espa�ol en 1526. No era te�logo, sino m�s bien fil�logo, profundo conocedor del pensamiento y arte del mundo cl�sico. Pero para Erasmo y sus seguidores, el valor de los estudios cl�sicos consist�a precisamente en que pod�an ser de una gran utilidad en el cometido de alcanzar una mejor comprensi�n del cristianismo, elucidando sus textos fundadores. En Espa�a, el erasmismo tuvo un formidable impacto. Fueron notables erasmistas Juan Luis Vives, Juan de Vergara, Alfonso de Vald�s y Andr�s Laguna. Tanto la Corona espa�ola como la Universidad de Alcal�, ofrecieron protecci�n a los erasmistas espa�oles. No obstante, mediada la d�cada de los 30, Carlos V lleg� a un acomodo con el Papa, al tiempo que la propagaci�n del protestantismo por Alemania hizo parecer peligroso el erasmismo, de modo que el emperador abandon� a sus antiguos protegidos y permiti� que la Inquisici�n los persiguiera con acusaciones de iluminismo. A pesar de ello, la corriente del erasmismo se mantuvo subterr�nea y lleg� a influenciar la obra del m�s grande escritor del Siglo de Oro, Miguel de Cervantes.
