The search for "the face of the era" how typology influenced art of the Weimar Republic and beyond In Weimar Germany, portraits by New Objectivity artists such as Otto Dix, George Grosz, Jeanne Mammen and Hanna Nagel were a testimony to the fascination with "types." This volume explores their relevance from the 1920s to the present day, underscoring the dilemma of stereotyping individuals.

At the turn of the century and the beginning of the new Millennium, India has made extraordinary industrial and economic progress. At the same time the sub-continent is faced with innumerable problems in the area of basic social services. Religion plays an important role in the interpersonal relationship and social interaction of the people. Religion is not only worship and prayer, but dictates such factors as who could come in physical contact with the other and who has the right to draw water from a well and who is deprived of it. Because of these factors it is necessary to look at the perception of disability in the soteriologies of India. This study confines itself to Hinduism as the major religion of India, that is based on the achievement of salvation and thus to escape the cycle of birth-, death- and rebirth and Christianity, on the other hand, that is involved in trying to improve the conditions of the poor and the needy and its main precept is the love of neighbours. It would be interesting to pursue these distinctions in reviewing the perception of disability in both these religions.

Series:Studies in Theology and Religion (STAR), Am 15. Christian ethics, also called moral theology in the tradition, is one of the most controversial topics within theology, as well as outside it. Yet the goal of these ethics is `a life in fullness and freedom'. Without ethical guidelines and personal responsibility, a life cannot succeed. Norms and laws aim to create space for life and protect it. To fill this freedom, people are responsible for that. And being responsible means: owing an answer to someone. Ethics therefore always takes place in relation: to one's own conscience, to the good that can be accomplished, and in relation to other living beings and nature. Christian ethics, moreover, places this responsibility in relation to God. People are free, but also limited; they hurt each other and need forgiveness and reconciliation. Often people can reconcile with each other, but sometimes accounts remain open: the evil was too great or the reconciliation failed. Christian theology can refer to redemption here. It is just not easy to reconcile its content with the everyday reality of modern people. This systematic introduction to moral theology offers an explanation in understandable anthropological terms. It shows how the Christian message provides a meaningful answer to the open question of how a human life can succeed. Anyone who tries to mediate meaningfully between tradition and modernity in the pastoral practice of the church will find this book a guide.
