"This collection brings together textual commentaries on thirty representative works of literature in Portuguese - either complete poems or extracts from longer works - ranging from the medieval lyric of the 13th century, through the poetry and drama of the Portuguese Renaissance, the great Realist novels of the nineteenth century, early twentieth century Modernism and post-1974 writings through to the present day, while also including examples of 19th- and 20th- century Brazilian literature. The authors chosen - poets, dramatists and novelists - are generally regarded as iconic writers, and the three most famous canonical Portuguese authors (Luis de Camoes, Fernando Pessoa, Jose Saramago) are featured, but the texts selected for commentary strike a balance between a focus on well-known and lesser-studied works. All the primary texts are reproduced in Portuguese, sometimes in original editions, with English translations added for the majority. The contributors variously explicate and contextualise the works they present, some focusing on hidden meaning, others on philological aspects of editing, others on their historical, intellectual and philosophical context, and others still on the process of translation itself. All, however, aim to develop the art of reading, for the benefit of scholars and students alike. Stephen Parkinson and Claudia Pazos Alonso are members of the Sub-Faculty of Portuguese at Oxford University, and editors of the Companion to Portuguese Literature (Tamesis, 2009)."

Na década de 40, o achado acidental de manuscritos bíblicos com mais de dois mil anos de idade, em uma época que o mundo estava sob intensas tensões e debates para decidir o futuro da nação de Israel, fez o mundo parar para contemplar esse achado. Este trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar ao leitor como surgiu a comunidade Qumrânica, e quais fatores levaram esse grupo a abandonar a civilização e viver em isolamento no deserto, bem como abordar alguns aspectos referentes ao cotidiano e as crenças desse povo, que embora fazendo parte de uma religião com um credo fixo e rigoroso, desenvolveram uma nova forma de interpretar as Escrituras, e uma maneira peculiar de descrever o Messias que se assemelha muito à visão do cristianismo primitivo. Este trabalho também visa descrever a história do descobrimento dos Manuscritos de Qumran, a batalha pela autenticidade e antiguidade dos pergaminhos, e o impacto que causaram no cristianismo moderno.

El descubrimiento de los primeros siete rollos de "Manuscritos del Mar Muerto" o "Rollos de Qumran" hecho por Jum'a y su primo Mohammed ed-Dhib, dos pastores beduinos de la tribu Ta'amireh, en una cueva a orillas del Mar Muerto en 1947, pusieron en marcha una revolución en la investigación del texto bíblico y en nuestra comprensión de los orígenes del cristianismo, que hoy en día, a comienzos del Siglo XXI, ningún teólogo serio se atreve a cuestionar. Este conjunto de manuscritos judíos, escritos en hebreo y arameo entre los años 150 a.C al 70 d.C., y descubiertos progresivamente a lo largo de los últimos cincuenta años en once cuevas, alcanza ya la cifra de 900. Incluyen los libros del "Tanaj" o A.T. excepto el libro de Ester; los llamados "Deuterocanónicos"; comentarios a cada uno de los libros del A.T.; las reglas, manuales y oraciones de la Comunidad; y otros textos diversos del período intertestamentario, como el "Libro de Enoc", "El Testamento de los Doce Patriarcas", "El Libro de los Jubileos", etc. Los interrogantes que este descubrimiento plantea, en lo que hace referencia al A.T. como al N.T. son tan fascinantes como importantes. Respecto al Antiguo Testamento: ¿Cómo encajan estos antiguos manuscritos bíblicos con los que ya conocíamos y en los que se basa el texto de nuestras versiones de la Biblia? ¿Nos permiten introducir correcciones a gran escala en los manuscritos masoréticos? ¿Por qué no se ha encontrado entre ellos el libro de Ester? Respecto el Nuevo Testamento: ¿Hasta donde llegan los antecedentes teológicos y los paralelismos entre algunas enseñanzas de esos Manuscritos y las del Nuevo Testamento? ¿Hubo realmente una colaboración entre cristianos y esenios durante un período determinado y luego se separaron? ¿Estuvo Pablo con los esenios de Damasco cuando escribe "fui a la región de Arabia (o Desierto), de donde luego regresé a Damasco" (Ga. 1:17)?
