A companion website provides additional exercises and a corpus of Spanish data for student research projects. A sample syllabus and suggestions for further reading help instructors tailor the material to a one-semester course or as a supplement to general introduction to Hispanic linguistics courses. The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon.

Spanish Vocabulary written by David Brodsky and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-04-20 with Foreign Language Study categories.

Unlike other vocabulary guides that require the rote memorization of literally thousands of words, this book starts from the premise that using the etymological connections between Spanish and English words—their common derivations from Latin, Greek, and other languages—is the most effective way to acquire and remember vocabulary. This approach is suitable for beginners as well as for advanced students. Teachers of the language will also find much material that can be used to help motivate their students to acquire, and retain, Spanish vocabulary. Spanish Vocabulary is divided into four parts and four annexes: Part I provides background material on the origins of Spanish and begins the process of presenting Spanish vocabulary. Part II presents "classical" Spanish vocabulary—words whose form (in both Spanish and English) is nearly unchanged from Latin and Greek. Part III deals with "popular" Spanish vocabulary, which underwent significant changes in form (and often meaning) during the evolution from Latin to Spanish. A number of linguistic patterns are identified that will help learners recognize and remember new vocabulary. Part IV treats a wide range of themes, including words of Germanic and Arabic origin, numbers, time, food and animals, the family, the body, and politics. Annex A: Principal exceptions to the "Simplified Gender Rule" Annex B: 700 words whose relations, if any, to English words are not immediately obvious Annex C: -cer verbs and related words Annex D: 4,500 additional words, either individually or in groups, with English correspondences

This book is a compilation of articles on different aspects of Spanish grammar in the areas of current theoretical syntax and semantics. The issue brings together scholars working on some formal aspects of Spanish predicative complementation (e.g., dequeísmo), neuter demonstrative pronouns, the subject of Psych verbs, the nature of non-verbal predication, and the internal structure of the Determiner Phrase (DP), cf. gender variation, among other topics. Linguists and philologists with interests in Spanish and/or in other Romance languages are the main target audience. The book will appeal also to researchers and students specializing in generative grammar, semantics and in the syntax/semantics interface. It will also be of interest to historical linguists and dialectologists addressing theoretical/formal issues (cf. Afro-Bolivian Spanish). The research in this book points to a cohesiveness in Spanish linguistics that lies in the integration of up-to-date empirically-based linguistic research with current theoretical assumptions on the nature of syntax and semantics.

Cassell's Contemporary Spanish is designed to make your Spanish-speaking experience relaxing and uncomplicated. Part 1, "A Concise Reference Grammar", is like a complete refresher course in the basics of sentence structure, verb forms (including modal verbs), gender, mood, tense, and parts of speech. It's filled with examples and focuses on the specific problems English speakers often encounter when they try to learn Spanish. Part 2, "Contemporary Functional Language", demonstrates the practical, modern, everyday workings of the language. It is this section especially that sets Cassell's Contemporary Spanish apart from any other language guide, because it gives you valuable advice for getting along on a day-to-day basis in a Spanish-speaking country - without sounding like an outdated phrase book. Here you'll find guidelines for using the telephone, asking for or giving advice, applying for a job and writing a resume, writing a personal or professional letter, and conducting business matters. This section also tackles the common questions and unnerving language nuances that plague nonfluent Spanish speakers, such as how to tell colloquial and slang expressions from vulgar ones, how to understand regionalisms and local etiquette, and how to avoid mistaking English sound-a-likes for Spanish words. Part 3, "Word Power", is made up of several specialized vocabularies that help you decipher the unique languages of finance and banking; politics and current affairs; shopping; travel; legal matters; media, the arts, and literature; even weather forecasts. There's a reference you can use to build on the verbs, nouns, and adjectives you already know, and a guide to using popular expressions. Withdozens of examples and illustrations, Cassell's Contemporary Spanish is guaranteed to make any visit or extended stay in a Spanish-speaking area relaxing, enjoyable, and hassle-free.
