l'Espill és una obra literària d'extraordinària riquesa lèxica i fràsica, un dels grans tresors de la llengua catalana. Què diuen les llengües quan parlen de nosaltres? I què diem de nosaltres quan parlem de les llengües? Aquestes dos preguntes recorren l’assaig La societat valenciana en l’espill lingüístic i vertebren una obra que versa sobre les relacions entre els grups socials i les llengües que parlen –o que no parlen–. Al costat d’aquestes, l’autor planteja unes altres qüestions que conviden a la reflexió i al debat: per a què serveixen les llengües? Què ens fa usar-ne algunes per damunt d’unes altres? Són les llengües un espill on podem mirar-nos? I què veem en el reflex? La societat valenciana en l’espill lingüístic, seguint l’esperit propi del gènere assagístic, exposa uns interrogants sense pretendre resoldre’ls de manera unívoca i analitza conceptes com la diversitat lingüística, el monolingüisme, el bilingüisme social passiu, el darwinisme lingüístic o els prejudicis i els nacionalismes lingüístics, entre molts altres. Les llengües al món, la situació dels set idiomes propis de l’estat espanyol i, sobretot, les actituds de la societat valenciana envers les llengües relliguen aquest assaig, que esdevé un càntic a favor del multilingüisme i la convivència lingüística i alerta sobre el perill dels imperialismes i dels supremacismes lingüístics.
