Una semiología de la obra dramática es en principio una teoría del género dramático realizada con una metodología semiológica y un modelo de análisis de obras dramáticas consideradas como objetos significantes que dan lugar a un específico proceso de comunicación. Una semiótica del género dramático puede partir del esquema general propuesto por Charles Morris y puede analizar los tres niveles: sintáctico, semántico y pragmático, que pueden distinguirse en el uso textual de todos los sistemas de signos, pero no es éste el único esquema posible. En nuestra Semiología de la obra dramática vamos a seguir otro basado fundamentalmente en las unidades que están en el texto dramático escrito y se mantienen en la representación escénica. La semiología dramática estudia, pues, el proceso de comunicación dramático en sus formas y en sus relaciones, es decir, en todos sus aspectos: analiza las unidades y categorías y sus relaciones sintácticas (formas, distribución en un esquema), el valor semántico que alcanzan (sentido lingüístico, literario y espectacular) y su sentido pragmático (relaciones del texto con los sujetos del proceso de comunicación dramática y también con los sistemas culturales envolventes: religión, ciencia, artes, etc.).

Este libro trata sobre el estudio del comportamiento resistente de componentes de máquinas y estructuras sometidos a tensiones que varían con el tiempo, las cuales causan un deterioro progresivo del material que puede acabar produciendo la rotura. La fatiga aparece en la mayoría de los productos y tiene una influencia decisiva en ámbitos como el de la automoción, el de los ferrocarriles, el aeronáutico, el aeroespacial y el naval, entre otros. La mayor parte de las roturas en servicio que se producen son debidas a la fatiga; hay estimaciones en las que se afirma que alrededor del 90 % de todos los fallos de elementos resistentes se deben a esta y se evalúa el coste, directo e indirecto, de dichos fallos en un porcentaje del 3 % al 5 % del producto interior bruto de los países desarrollados. La finalidad de la obra es presentar, analizar y comparar, a través de sus 11 capítulos, los principales métodos de cálculo de fatiga para su utilización de forma eficaz en tareas de ingeniería. Puede utilizarse como texto en asignaturas de cálculo resistente, elementos de máquinas, diseño mecánico y estructural y de fatiga y fractura en general, en los cursos de grado, máster y doctorado de diferentes titulaciones de ingeniería. También está pensado como libro de consulta para cálculo y diseño de fatiga de elementos mecánicos y estructurales en la industria, incluyendo aplicaciones avanzadas útiles para el desarrollo y la investigación. En cada capítulo se estudia un aspecto concreto y completo de la fatiga de materiales, por lo que los lectores con un cierto nivel previo de formación pueden estudiar o consultar capítulos aislados o partes de estos, pero a la vez se ha intentado que exista continuidad y progresividad para que quienes no posean conocimientos previos de fatiga puedan alcanzar un buen nivel de formación a través de la lectura secuencial del libro completo.
