Questo libro segue la traccia lasciata da Marta di Betania che, nella tradizione evangelica, accoglie nella sua casa un ospite inatteso e straordinario. Marta non è solo colei che rassetta in cucina; Marta è il simbolo della vita attiva e a Marta quell’ospite rivela cose mai dette a nessuno. Come Teresa Batista, che accompagna i capitoli del libro, Marta è donna di amori e di guerre, di fedi e di scelte dove la donna del Medioevo celebra Dio e la propria personalità. Essere Marta vuol dire essere dentro le cose, esserne vittima oppure ordinatrice, caritatevole o vendicativa, ma significa anche essere colei che accoglie: l’impegno personale, le aspirazioni, il misurarsi con i molti disagi e con il rischio dei sentimenti. Il Medioevo non lascia molte alternative al grafico sociale della donna chiusa in ruoli subalterni o soltanto familiari. Invece esistono comportamenti femminili che eludono questa geografia e prendono la scena. Si tratta di vere protagoniste, donne famose, anonime o dimenticate, personaggi che letteratura, storiografia e poesia raccontano tra colori, voci e silenzi. Nell’immagine di copertina Vermeer dipinge Marta che offre il pane: è una donna che rappresenta, oltre il tempo, la vita attiva; è una donna che agisce, nutre, prega e s’impegna. Tutte le donne della storia sono modi di essere Marta e reggono il mondo. Nell’universo sociale così mutevole e difettivo la vita attiva si esprime nell’amore, ma anche nelle guerre, nelle rivalità per il potere, nella gestione della carità e delle accoglienze, nelle devozioni e nei tradimenti. La vita febbrile e la facile morte: sono le due estremità di un segmento di esistenze dove regine, devote e assassine, affiancano le solitudini drammatiche di principesse emarginate, e le donne virtuose e sapienti, monache o laiche, non si meravigliano ai licenziosi abbandoni di chi segue l’illusione di sentirsi diversa per non essere inquieta. Marta opera in un teatro di scene incessanti dove si muovono indimenticabili fisionomie di un modo d’essere donna nel Medioevo.

«La tradizione orale e la tradizione popolare sono come torrenti, e quell’acqua, che finisce nell’alto mare della cultura scritta, è un’inarrestabile sorgente di continuo rinnovamento. E, come ogni acqua, corre il rischio di essere inquinata: discariche orali e popolari, spesso luride, intenzionali e malevole, finiscono nella tradizione dei testi. Eppure questo non impedisce un’incessante evoluzione delle società dove donne e uomini esprimono sempre più forte il loro punto di vista e la loro partecipazione ai fatti con quell’“Io c’ero, io ho visto e ho raccontato...” che sta alla base di ogni processo comunicativo non soltanto del Medioevo». Questo libro cerca di capire che cosa rappresenti la cultura nella società medievale, individuata nei differenti settori sociali di consumo, dai più alti e colti ai più popolari e umili. Gower's achievement in writing substantially in all three primary languages of his time-Anglo-French, English, and Latin-was a source of pride to others and, undoubtedly, to him too: into the final years of his life he continued to produce poetry in all three languages. Certainly there is reason to know these poems for the light they shed on the intense partisanship and events of great moment surrounding the usurpation 1399-1400. It was during these parlous times that Gower composed most of the poems included here. All are important documents historically; but they are also poems admirable equally for their skill and craft. In Praise of Peace is in the same position as the shorter Latin works edited and translated in this volume: ignored, neglected, reduced, or relegated to the dusty realm of footnotes. But there is far more at work in this complex poem, as Gower's verse deftly weaves in and out of the historical, political, social, and religious contexts and controversies of its day. In tone, In Praise of Peace is, if not triumphant, determinedly optimistic. In this light, we might view the poem as a coda to Gower's long career, restating and reinvigorating his famously moral principles about just rule of self and society.

Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian revolutionary leader and popular hero, was among the best-known figures of the nineteenth century. This book seeks to examine his life and the making of his cult, to assess its impact, and understand its surprising success. For thirty years Garibaldi was involved in every combative event in Italy. His greatest moment came in 1860, when he defended a revolution in Sicily and provoked the collapse of the Bourbon monarchy, the overthrow of papal power in central Italy, and the creation of the Italian nation state. Handsome, flamboyant, and sexually attractive, he was worshiped in life and became a cult figure after his death in 1882. The first international history of the emergence of economic sanctions during the interwar period and the legacy of this development Economic sanctions dominate the landscape of world politics today. First developed in the early twentieth century as a way of exploiting the flows of globalization to defend liberal internationalism, their appeal is that they function as an alternative to war. This view, however, ignores the dark paradox at their core: designed to prevent war, economic sanctions are modeled on devastating techniques of warfare. Tracing the use of economic sanctions from the blockades of World War I to the policing of colonial empires and the interwar confrontation with fascism, Nicholas Mulder uses extensive archival research in a political, economic, legal, and military history that reveals how a coercive wartime tool was adopted as an instrument of peacekeeping by the League of Nations.
