From Eulogy To Joy is a unique, autobiographical anthology. These moving and thought-provoking personal stories are shared from the heart and contain the words of people who are experts by virtue of having experienced grief firsthand in myriad situations: loss of children, siblings, parents, mates, relatives and friends through accidents, illness, suicide, murder and natural death. From Eulogy to Joy provides comfort and reassurance that grief is intensely individual and, as such, all responses are appropriate. This book unveils the revolutionary fact that, contrary to common belief, we never get over the death of someone close and actually never should. The Last Word investigates the debased art of eulogy. Through insightful, surprisingly playful readings of famous eulogies (from a scene in Love Actually to Jacques Derrida’s heart-rending essays on the deaths of his peers), Cooper argues against the socially sanctioned desire to avoid thinking about death that results in clichéd memorials, honoring neither the living nor the dead.

Derived from the Greek for "word of praise," the eulogy is a longstanding tradition of recognition and remembrance. The speeches and essays gathered in this collection offer thought-provoking commemorations of the lives and deeds of politicians, authors, poets, and other influential individuals. Starting with Pericles' Funeral Oration, a classic example of the rite, these writings turn their focus to historical figures of the past two centuries, from America's Founding Fathers to Nelson Mandela. Nineteenth-century selections include the stirring address read at Beethoven's funeral; a reminiscence of Charlotte Brontë by her great literary hero, William Thackeray; recollections of Henry David Thoreau by Ralph Waldo Emerson; and eulogies for Abraham Lincoln, Walt Whitman, and Voltaire, on the one-hundredth anniversary of his death. Among the latter-day tributes are salutes to Albert Einstein, T. S. Eliot, and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as President Ronald Reagan's farewell to the Challenger astronauts, Stephen Spender's paean to W. H. Auden, Bob Costas's eulogy for Mickey Mantle, and many other moving words of praise for men and women whose achievements serve as an ongoing source of inspiration.

The Politics And Pedagogy Of Mourning written by Timothy Secret and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-26 with Philosophy categories.

Jacques Derrida famously stated in Specters of Marx that a justice worthy of the name must call us to render justice not only to the living but also to the dead. In The Politics and Pedagogy of Mourning, Timothy Secret argues that offering a persuasive account of such a duty requires establishing a discussion among the 20th century's three key thinkers on death – Heidegger, Levinas and Freud. Despite arguing that none of these three figures' discourses offers us a complete account of our duty to the dead and that it remains impossible to unify them into a single, consistent and correct approach, Secret nevertheless offers an account of how Derrida managed to produce an always singular articulation of these discourses in each of the acts of eulogy he offered for his philosophical contemporaries. This is one of the first monographs to pay particular attention to the key role any contemporary account of the ethics of eulogy must grant to the revolutionary theoretical work on the materiality of crypts and phantoms offered by the psychoanalysts Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok. Their work is shown to supplement major limitations in traditional philosophical accounts of the ethical relation. The account of eulogy as a privileged space where different discourses act on each other under the pressure of responding responsibly to an always singular loss proves itself essential reading not only for those interested in understanding Derrida's overtly political works, but also offers an account of a performative training in negotiating aporias that arise in political society – the result of which is a pedagogy in the art of civility whose relevance today is more timely than ever.
