This edited collection studies the production and dissemination of popular music, tourism, cinema, fashion, broadcasting programmes, advertising and coffee in Western Europe in the twentieth century. Focussing on the supply side of popular culture, it addresses a field of study that is neglected in European historiography. Moreover, it provides a theoretical and methodological discussion that takes into account the inherent dynamics of content production and the role of cultural intermediaries in the change of cultural repertoires. Taking key developments in the culture industries in the USA as a point of reference, the book highlights particularities of cultural production in Europe. It identifies a greater autonomy of creatives, stronger influence of critics and a lesser concern with audience research as three characteristics of the production regime in Western Europe. It takes into view the transfer of popular culture across the Atlantic and between European countries and offers new insights into research on the cultural Americanisation of Europe. Missbrauch, sexuelle Gewalt, Inzest. Miranda M. erlebte eine schwere Kindheit. Sie wurde vom eigenen Vater, vom Onkel und von zahlenden Männern jahrelang missbraucht. Die Missbrauchsgeschichte dauerte mehr als 20 Jahre. In der Familie kümmerte sich weder ihr Vater noch ihre Mutter um sie. Ihr stand niemand bei. Die Folge war eine soziale und seelische Verwahrlosung. Sie wurde weder schulisch gefördert, noch erhielt sie eine Ausbildung. Aber sie diente den Männern schon als Kleinkind zur Befriedigung der perversen Lust und sexualisierter Gewalt. Schnell zeigten sich bei Miranda neben sozialen auch psychische Schädigungen. Sie konsumierte Alkohol und Drogen, ging keiner geregelten Arbeit nach, liess sich mit falschen Männern ein, die es nicht gut mit ihr meinten. Mit 37 Jahren kam es zur ersten Einweisung in eine psychiatrische Klinik, viele weitere Hospitalisierungen folgten. Endlich entdeckte man ihre seelischen Erkrankung und diagnostizierte das Krankheitsbild der DIS, der Dissoziativen Identitätsstörung, auch Multiple Persönlichkeitsstörung genannt. In den Kliniken versuchte man ihr zu helfen, doch erst spät führte man Miranda einer spezifischen Traumatherapie zu. Am Ende ihres kurzen und leidvollen Lebens verbrachte Miranda noch einige Jahre in betreuten Wohnformen. Im Alter von 46 Jahren warf sie sich in grosser Verzweiflung unter den Zug. Wir vermissen sie.
