Cardiovascular Drug Therapy In The Elderly written by Adam Schneeweiss and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-11 with Medical categories.

Cardiovascular drug therapy has markedly progressed in the recent decades. Not only have new drugs been introduced to clinical practice, but new classes of drugs have been developed. While in 1960 the practicing cardiolo gist had a selection of about only ten drugs, in 1987 about 150 drugs are routinely used in cardiovascular diseases. Elderly patients, however, usually do not enjoy the full benefit of this progress. This might be due to lack of knowledge, a conservative approach, or the worldwide tendency not to try new drugs in the elderly. It is now clear that the majority of patients that will be treated in car diovascular clinics will be, in the near future, elderly patients. Even now, elderly patients form about one-third of the patients with cardiovascular diseases. These patients are approached, however, according to criteria devel oped for younger populations. This is despite the fact that elderly patients differ from younger ones in most aspects, including pathology, epidemiol ogy, pathophysiology, diagnostic approach, management, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, rehabilitation, and supportive treatment. It is the purpose of this book to present to the clinician all drugs with which there is clinical experience in the elderly or which might be potentially useful for the elderly with cardiovascular diseases. The data are presented without the authors taking a position. This should allow the clinicians to make their own selection and individualize treatment, vii viii Preface based on a wide data base. Comparative data are presented only when specific comparative studies were performed.

Clinical Applications Of Cardiovascular Drugs written by L.S. Dreifus and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

During the past decade enormous progress has been made in the development of new cardiovascular drugs and in our understanding of the clinical pharma cology and the pharmacokinetics of old drugs. In addition, newer applications of older agents have emerged. For example, vasodilators such as nitroglycerin are now being employed in the treatment of congestive heart failure, and anti hypertensives such as bretylium are used in the management of ventricular arrhythmias. Individual chapters in this book focus on (1) the clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of the individual drugs, and (2) the clinical applications of these drugs, with attention also to serum concentrations, pathophysiology, and drug interactions where appropriate. The contributors to this text have labored to provide the reader with a meaningful, practical update on the clinical uses and usefulness of cardioactive drugs. We are deeply grateful to each of them for their generous participation in this endeavor. LEONARD S. DREIFUS, M.D. ALBERT N. BREST, M.D. 1. ANTIARRHYTHMIC AGENTS LEONARD S. DREIFUS and JOEL MORGANROTH Ideally, the management of cardiac arrhythmias must be predicated on (1) complete elucidation of the genesis of the various rhythm disturbances, and (2) a full understanding of the pharmacologic action of individual antiarrhythmic agents. Only with this precise information does it become possible to administer a particular agent or agents specifically effective against a given arrhythmia.
