Because it is rich in an unstable fat, age and high temperatures often cause it to become rancid and unpalatable. Linseed and soybean meals are high in phosphorus and protein, low in calcium, and extremely palatable. Roughages. - Alfalfa, clover, vetch, and other legume hays, When properly cured, are among the best roughages for livestock feeding. They furnish proteins of good quality and are extremely rich in lime and the necessary vitamins. Their palatability is excellent. Excerpt from Raising Dairy Calves in California IT Is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and improve a dairy herd by adding females through purchase, because the dairyman cannot then follow an intelligent breeding program to improve permanently the inherent productive capacity of his herd, and because there is also danger of introducing disease. Milk cannot well be produced at a profit with a diseased herd, and in many cases legal restrictions hamper the sale of either milk or cattle from such herds. For the average dairyman, therefore, herd improvement in milk pro duction and protection against disease must come through a well-planned breeding program, which necessitates the raising of normal, healthy, female calves, from the best cows in the herd, and sired by a carefully selected purebred bull. Cattle may be raised on cheap lands on grazing areas not suitable for cultivation, whereas the feeding or finishing must be done in farming areas where a surplus of roughage and concentrates is produced. The Southwest and Intermountain' regions are typical cattle raising or breeding grounds, while the Corn Belt is the great finishing area. In California there are vast areas of grazing lands, which at present are depended upon not only to carry breeding herds, but also to furnish fat cattle for market. Although feeding is done in the irrigated valleys, it does not at present occupy a very significant place in the program of beef production of the state.
