A re-presentation of women artists whose works were widely exhibited and regularly featured in the French art press and in modern art surveys from 1900 to the 1920s, but who largely disappeared from public view after World War II. The analysis of their work unravels the cultural, aesthetic, and economic reasons for their absence, particularly the issue of "feminine" and "masculine" categories in art. The artists featured include: Emilie Charmy, Jacqueline Marval, Maria Blanchard, Alice Halicka, Marevna, Alice Bailly, Marie Vassiliev, Suzanne Roger, and Mela Muter. The text includes fine color reproductions, bibliographic appendices, and an excerpt from Marevna's writings. Distributed by St. Martin's Press. The Creative Feminine And Her Discontents written by Juliet Miller and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-24 with Psychology categories.

This book is an attempt to look at creativity from a female perspective. By looking at artistic endeavour, mothering and psychotherapeutic relationships, the author considers how a patriarchal world distorts the channels through which women discover their own creative voices. She argues that the dynamics of female creativity are more multi- layered and conflicted for women for a variety of historical, cultural and archetypal reasons and suggests that an attack on the creative feminine has been exacerbated by the history and teaching of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. The author looks to the artistic community to discover new ways for the creative feminine to grow and assesses how ideas of destruction and anarchy are crucial for the expression of a feminine self. The work of two contemporary sculptors, Cornelia Parker and Louise Bourgeois, is explored to show how there can be authentic relationships to creativity through the ideas of deconstruction and reconstruction in their work. This book will interest psychotherapists and analysts and both women and men interested in their own relationship to their creativity.

A significant contribution to the understanding of sixteenth-century English art in an historical context, this study by Susan James represents an intensive rethinking and restructuring of the Tudor art world based on a broad, detailed survey of women's diverse creative roles within that world. Through an extensive analysis of original documents, James examines and clarifies many of the misperceptions upon which modern discussions of Tudor art are based. The new evidence she lays out allows for a fresh investigation of the economics of art production, particularly in the images of Elizabeth I; of strategies for influencing political situations by carefully planned programs of portraiture; of the seminal importance of extended clans of immigrant Flemish artists and of careers of artists Susanna Horenboult and Lievine Teerlinc and their impact on the development of the portrait miniature. Drawn principally from primary sources, this book presents important new research which examines the contributions of Tudor women in the formation, distribution and popularization of the visual arts, particularly portraiture and the portrait miniature. James highlights the involvement of women as patrons, consumers and creators of art in sixteenth-century England and their use of the painted image as a statement of cultural worth. She explores and analyzes the amount of time, money, effort and ingenuity which women across all social classes invested in the development of art, in the uses they found for it, and the surprising and unexpected ways in which they exploited it.

Vision and Difference, published in 1988, is one of the most significant works in feminist visual culture arguing that feminist art history of is a political as well as academic endeavour. Pollock expresses how images are key to the construction of sexual difference, both in visual culture and in broader societal experiences. Her argument places feminist theory at the centre of art history, proffering the idea that a feminist understanding of art history is an analysis of art history itself. This text remains key not only to understand feminine art historically but to grasp strategies for representation in the future and adding to its contemporary value.

This book provides a critical reappraisal of Barbara Creed’s ground-breaking work of feminist psychoanalytic film scholarship, The Monstrous-Feminine, which was first published in 1993. The Monstrous-Feminine married psychoanalytic thinking with film analysis in radically new ways to provide an invaluable corrective to conventional approaches to the study of women in horror films, with their narrow emphasis on woman’s victimhood. This volume, which will mark 25 years since the publication of The Monstrous-Feminine, brings together essays by international scholars working across a variety of disciplines who take up Creed’s ideas in new ways and fresh contexts or, more broadly, explore possible futures for feminist and/or psychoanalytically informed art history and film theory.

Who can deny that a cosmic unity of Yin, the universal feminine energy, and Yang, the universal masculine energy, exist? Who can deny that the prevailing global dominance of masculine energy is the source of the imbalance of this cosmic unity of Yin and Yang? Who can deny that Yin, Mother Nature, is reacting to this disequilibrium in form of water and fire, the very symbols of feminine and masculine energy? Who can deny that even the Goddess of Art is dominated by male energy? Who can deny that the perception of Art, or what is supposed to be Art and what is not, underlies a male dominated concept? It is precisely in this context that the paintings and poems of the female artist Maria Madonera surpass the conventional male-dominated concept of Art. "The paintings of Maria Madonera excel in an extraordinary richness of expression. In connection with its modern terms and unusual colouring, they remind us of the expressionists, but are elevated by a transcendence similar to that of Chagall". (Ecomond Press, Rome)
