Estudio de sociolog�a (1897) (en franc�s: Le suicide. �tude de sociologie) es una de las m�s importantes obras del soci�logo franc�s �mile Durkheim que trata sobre el suicidio como fen�meno social. Con ello rompe la tendencia tradicional de considerarlo como un fen�meno estrictamente individual y por ende s�lo como objeto de la psicolog�a o de la moral.Durkheim inicia su obra se�alando la necesidad de que los t�rminos utilizados por los investigadores sean cient�ficamente definidos y no tomados acr�ticamente del uso vulgar. Las palabras, tal como son usadas ordinariamente, resultan por lo general ambiguas en su significado y, al surgir de una clasificaci�n inconsciente generada a partir de impresiones confusas, no refleja la verdadera naturaleza de las cosas. As� resulta que se nombran con el mismo t�rmino cosas esencialmente distintas al tiempo que cosas afines son designadas con diferentes nombres. Una clasificaci�n cient�fica deber�, por el contrario, mediante un an�lisis met�dico y consciente, adecuar los t�rminos a la realidad: que las cosas afines y comparables sean reunidas bajo un mismo t�rmino (pues el cient�fico explica comparando) mientras que las que no lo son sean tambi�n diferenciadas por el lenguaje.La definici�n que Durkheim da de "suicidio" es la siguiente: �Se llama suicidio a todo caso de muerte que resulte directa o indirectamente de un acto positivo o negativo, ejecutado por la propia v�ctima, a sabiendas de que habr�a de producir este resultado�.Queda en evidencia que los suicidios no son monstruosidades ajenas a cualquier conducta normal: �No son otra cosa que la forma exagerada de pr�cticas usuales�,pr�cticas usuales que s�lo se diferencian del suicidio por una cuesti�n de grado consistente �nicamente en que la certeza de la muerte es menor: �Si un hombre expone a sabiendas su vida por otro, pero sin que sea seguro un desenlace mortal, no es por cierto un suicida, ni aun si llegara a morir, como tampoco lo es el imprudente que juega resueltamente con la muerte, aun tratando de evitarla, o el ap�tico que, por no estar vivamente apegado a nada, no se toma el trabajo de cuidar su salud y la compromete con su negligencia�.Ahora bien, en estos casos, �toda la diferencia [con los suicidios] estriba en que las probabilidades de morir son menores�

Esto es, desde un punto de vista social. Analizando esas tasas, se percata de que suelen mantenerse constantes o con cambios muy leves a lo largo de prolongados per�odos. Igualmente, los picos o los valles acusados en las gr�ficas corresponden con acontecimientos como guerras o depresiones econ�micas.Tambi�n se percata de que la tasa de suicidios es diferente de unos pa�ses y de unas comunidades a otras. El suicidio es ante todo un hecho social y sus causas son antes sociales que individuales o netamente psicol�gicas. Durkheim no s�lo estudia las diferencias seg�n religi�n sino seg�n matrimonio, hijos, grupos profesionales, g�nero, edad, grupos pol�ticos, tipo de sociedad o de medio social, etc. Ello le permite ver las diferentes causas sociales del suicidio, que son las determinantes, y establecer para cada tipo de causa un tipo de suicidio diferente.

Secondo i più recenti studi, infatti, le motivazioni alla base di questo fenomeno derivano da un’interazione di fattori biologici e ambientali, che si intrecciano con ulteriori implicazioni psicologiche, sociali e culturali. Questo volume analizza la varietà dei fenomeni autolesivi (vero e proprio suicidio, tentato suicidio, altre forme di comportamento anticonservativo) e individua le categorie di soggetti più interessate, con particolare attenzione agli adolescenti e alle popolazioni speciali (carcerati, forze dell’ordine), descrivendo fattori di rischio e di protezione e delineando strategie di trattamento e prevenzione.
