In response to the American administration's attempt to isolate Cuba, Fidel Castro delivered a series of speeches designed to radicalize Latin American society. As Latin America experiences more revolutions in Venezuela and Bolivia, and continues to upset America's plans for neo-liberal imperialism, renowned radical writer and activist Tariq Ali provides a searing analysis of the relevance of Castro's message for today.

Over the last decade, studies of the Cold War have mushroomed globally. Unfortunately, work on Latin America has not been well represented in either theoretical or empirical discussions of the broader conflict. With some notable exceptions, studies have proceeded in rather conventional channels, focusing on U.S. policy objectives and high-profile leaders (Fidel Castro) and events (the Cuban Missile Crisis) and drawing largely on U.S. government sources. Moreover, only rarely have U.S. foreign relations scholars engaged productively with Latin American historians who analyze how the international conflict transformed the region's political, social, and cultural life. Representing a collaboration among eleven North American, Latin American, and European historians, anthropologists, and political scientists, this volume attempts to facilitate such a cross-fertilization. In the process, In From the Cold shifts the focus of attention away from the bipolar conflict, the preoccupation of much of the so-called "new Cold War history," in order to showcase research, discussion, and an array of new archival and oral sources centering on the grassroots, where conflicts actually brewed. The collection's contributors examine international and everyday contests over political power and cultural representation, focusing on communities and groups above and underground, on state houses and diplomatic board rooms manned by Latin American and international governing elites, on the relations among states regionally, and, less frequently, on the dynamics between the two great superpowers themselves. In addition to charting new directions for research on the Latin American Cold War, In From the Cold seeks to contribute more generally to an understanding of the conflict in the global south. An in-depth explanation of how the Cuban Revolution dictated Latin American politics and U.S.-Latin American relations from the 1950s to the present, including widespread democratization and the rise of the "Pink Tide." Fidel Castro's ascent to power and the revolution he carried out in Cuba not only catalyzed a wave of revolutionary activity; it also set off a wave of reaction that led to widespread military dictatorships and severe repression culminating in state terrorism. Both revolution and reaction were essentially over by 1990, and yet significant long-term effects of the Cuban Revolution can still be seen in the modern era. Latin America in the Era of the Cuban Revolution and Beyond covers the events of the Cuban Revolution itself, the resulting radicalization of Latin American politics, the United States' responses to the threat of communist expansion in the hemisphere, and rural and urban guerrilla warfare that were spawned by the Cuban Revolution. It also addresses the very different but incomplete communist revolutions in Peru, Chile, and Nicaragua, the rise of state terrorism in response to the threat of revolution, and major developments after 1990. This book provides unique historical insights by bringing together under the umbrella of the impact of the Cuban Revolution developments that otherwise might seem unrelated to each other, thereby documenting the relationship between revolution and reaction. This third edition has three new chapters covering state terrorism in South America; state terrorism in Central America; and post-1990 developments such as neoliberalism, an unprecedented degree of democratization, the "Pink Tide" of leftist governments like those of Hugo Chávez in Venezuela and Evo Morales in Bolivia; and women's major gains in politics. Additionally, all of the chapters and the bibliography are updated.

The Awakening Of Latin America written by Ernesto Che Guevara and has been published by Seven Stories Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-26 with Political Science categories.

This classic anthology on Latin America shows the Argentine-born revolutionary's cultural depth, rigorous intellect, and intense emotional engagement with a continent and its people. In a letter to his mother in 1954, a young Ernesto Guevara wrote, “The Americas will be the theater of my adventures in a way that is much more significant than I would have believed.” In The Awakening of Latin America we have the story of those adventures, charting Che’s evolution from an impressionable young medical student to the “heroic guerrilla,” assassinated in cold blood in Bolivia. Spanning seventeen years, this anthology draws on from his family’s personal archives and offers the best of Che’s writing: examples of his journalism, essays, speeches, letters, and even poems. As Che documents his early travels through Latin America, his involvement in the Guatemalan and Cuban revolutions, and his rise to international prominence under Fidel Castro, we see how his fervent commitment to social justice shaped and was shaped by the continent he called home.

*Includes pictures of Fidel and important people, places, and events. *Includes some of Fidel's quotes about Cuba, the Revolution, and America. *Includes a Bibliography of books about Castro and written by him. "Men do not shape destiny. Destiny produces the man for the hour." - Fidel Castro, 1959. Fidel Castro is one of the most influential and controversial men of the last 50 years, equally revered and reviled by people across the globe. To the West, Castro has long been one of the prominent faces of Communism, and the main reason Cuba has been ostracized by many liberal democracies, particularly the United States. On the other hand, Castro has been admired by those who despised capitalism, and despite the fact the political platform Castro advocated has been almost universally repudiated and only maintains a weak hold even in Cuba, Castro's Marxist-leaning writings and speeches have influenced other leaders across the globe, from Hugo Chavez to Nelson Mandela. Although his health has been poor for several years, and rumors relentlessly abound about his imminent demise, Castro continues to be the face of Cuba, for better and worse. But while everybody is at least partially familiar with his leadership of the Cuban Revolution and Cuba itself, far fewer are familiar with Castro's past and the vision he had for himself. Latin American Revolutionaries: The Life and Legacy of Fidel Castro chronicles the life, work and revolutions Castro was involved in, while analyzing the controversies and legacy he left in his wake. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events in his life, you will learn about Fidel like you never have before, in no time at all.

Latin America In The Era Of The Cuban Revolution written by Thomas C. Wright and has been published by Greenwood this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with History categories.

Thomas C. Wright describes and explains the extraordinary impact that the Cuban Revolution had on Latin America and on U.S.-Latin American relations during the past three decades. Wright integrates diverse and complex political events into a comprehensive and comprehensible whole--providing a broad perspective on this critical period in Latin American history. Wright does not use a country-by-country approach, but rather a unique synthesis of broadly defined trends and phases that affected significant numbers of Latin American countries and people. Among the currents examined are the destabilizing influence of fidelismo, the rise of rural and urban guerrilla warfare, the Alliance for Progress, the growth of U.S. military involvement in Latin America, and the rise of terrorist military regimes. Three country-specific topics--the military revolution in Peru, the Allende government in Chile, and the Sandinista struggle in Nicaragua--are examined separately due to their universal interest and their importance to the whole of Latin America. Successfully linking the most important Latin American political developments of three decades to the pervasive influence of Fidel Castro and his revolution, Wright presents 1990 as the final year in this coherent, discrete era that most Latin American historians agree began in 1959. This text will interest university and college classes on Latin American history, Latin American politics, and revolution and reform courses, as well as professional Latin Americanists in many specializations.
