Excerpt from Field and Laboratory Note Book in Physical Geography Laboratory work in Physical Geography has for some years been in a transitional stage that is now approaching but has not yet reached a regular routine similar to that of the chemistry or physical laboratory. Many teachers have been working out a series of laboratory exercises for their own classes. Some of these that have proven more or less successful have been published as an aid to other teachers. Professor Merrill adds a manual to the list that appears to fill a need in the schools arising from the fact that some of the manuals already published are too elementary and some are too far advanced. That is, some of them require too much purely mechanical work, giving the impression that the object is to occupy the hands of the pupil regardless of whether the exercise illustrates any principles or leads to any conclusions. The other class of manuals presumes too much on the previous knowledge and experience of the pupil for the early years of the school. This gap between the two kinds of manuals appears to be filled better by Professor Merrill's book than by any other that I have seen. It likewise is wider in its scope and covers the whole field of Physical Geography more thoroughly than any other. Excerpt from Field, Laboratory, and Library Manual in Physical Geography In offering this manual to the public the author wishes to express the hope that it may prove helpful to his fellow-teach ers, and that teachers and pupils alike may get from it at least a portion of the pleasure that he has taken in working out its exercises. The manual consists of readings and exercises selected from those which he has used in his own classes in the high school. He hopes that they may be of value in guiding others in their first attempts at scientific investigation and research. Physical geography gives the student a broader outlook than any other science in the curriculum of secondary schools. It is a proper culmination of the nature study of the grammar school, and an appropriate introduction to the more technical and rigid sciences of the high school. Its value arises in part from the fact that it touches nature in so many places. Its many sidedness and its alluring bypaths have tempted pupil and teacher alike. However enjoyable the physical side of it may be, it should not be forgotten that it is geography. Its greatest value arises from the fact that it introduces the student to his geographical environment and suggests to him how he may utilize it. Commerce, history, and even sociology have paid their tribute to this study. The intimate and necessary relation that exists between physical geography and history is the theme of more than one recent and valuable book. Excerpt from Laboratory and Field, Exercises in Physical Geography Physical Geography has at last come to take its place among the other sciences as a subject which requires laboratory and field work for its highest development. The reasons for the introduction of laboratory methods in this subject are the same as those which demand its use in the other sciences, namely, the training which the pupil receives in the laboratory and the additional light thrown upon the subjects discussed in the class room. As Physical Geography is so generally assigned a place in the first year of the high-school course, it is of special importance that this first science should be so taught as to inculcate scientific methods of study. But while the need of laboratory work is universally recognized by the leading educators, this adjunct has not yet found its way into the methods of the majority of our secondary schools. The causes we need not go far to seek. This newer feature of laboratory work in Physical Geography has been introduced in such comparatively recent years that there has not yet been sufficient time for schools and teachers to adapt themselves to the changed conditions. This is simply a repetition of what has happened in the development of the other sciences.
