The purpose of this study is to evaluate financial and non-financial variables using the bankruptcy prediction model. Considering Taiwan companies listed between 2001 and 2005, the estimation sample comprises 140 firms (70 failing and 70 non-failing), and the validation sample comprises 52 firms (26 failing and 26 non-failing). In contrast to previous studies, this paper provides a corporate governance index as non-financial variables to predict financial distress along with financial index. Logistic regression is applied to examine these samples for 3 year data prior to business failure. In the estimation sample, the indexes combining both financial and corporate governance indexes gave the most accurate predictions. In the validation sample, the financial variables yielded the most accurate predictions.

This paper performs an empirical investigation on the relationship among the possibility of financial distress, firm performance, corporation governance and macroeconomic environment using the companies listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSEC) and the financial distress events took place between 1997 and 2003. It is observed that the firms on the brush with bankruptcy defined as follows: insolvent companies; firms under 100%-cash margin requirement; trading-halt companies; firms de-listed from TSEC; net worth is negative; serious loss. The sample data set are formed according to the industry-matched and size-matched principle. We build up a quarters-ahead-predicting model of financial distress allowing for measuring treatment effects of governance characteristics. Meanwhile, we present a moving-window with augmenting information set research design to evaluate the capacity of our forecasting model. It is found that the capacity of poor company to come out of financial distress is determined by how transparent the governance is, especially for one-quarter ahead of prediction. All of the poor companies falling into the observed group of CEO with high stock-holding and those pledging ratio almost went into bankruptcy. Through the comparison of moving-window research design, we found that the early warning model with treatment effects performs better in prediction power than those competitive models.

Institutional Change In Japan written by Magnus Blomström and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-21 with Business & Economics categories.

This is a new analysis of recent changes in important Japanese institutions. It addresses the origin, development, and recent adaptation of core institutions, including financial institutions, corporate governance, lifetime employment, and the amakudari system. After four decades of rapid economic growth in Japan, the 1990s saw the country enter a prolonged period of economic stagnation. Policy reforms were initially half-hearted, and businesses were slow to restructure as the global economy changed. The lagging economy has been impervious to aggressive fiscal stimulus measures and has been plagued by ongoing price deflation for years. Japan’s struggle has called into question the ability of the country’s economic institutions, originally designed to support factor accumulation and rapid development, to adapt to the new economic environment of the twenty-first century. This book discusses both historical and international comparisons including Meiji Japan, and recent economic and financial reforms in Korea, Scandinavia, Switzerland, and New Zealand, placing the current institutional changes in perspective. The contributors argue that, contrary to conventional wisdom that Japanese institutions have remained relatively rigid, there has been significant institutional change over the last decade.

Can Islamic finance save the global system? Islamic Finance and the New Financial System describes how the adoption of Islamic finance principles in future regulatory decisions could help prevent future shocks in the global financial system. Using illustrations and examples to highlight key points in recent history, this book discusses the causes of financial crises, why they are becoming more frequent and increasingly severe, and how the new financial system will incorporate elements of Islamic finance – whether deliberately or not. With an introspective look at the system and an examination of the misconceptions and deficiencies in theory vs. practice, readers will learn why Islamic finance has not been as influential as it should be on the larger global system. Solutions to these crises are thoroughly detailed, and the author puts forth a compelling argument about what can be expected in the future. Despite international intervention and global policy changes, the financial system remains in a fragile state. There is an argument to be made about integrating Islamic finance into the new system to facilitate stronger resilience, and this book explains the nuts and bolts of the idea while providing the reader with a general understanding of Islamic finance. Understand the key principles of Islamic finance Examine the history of the current financial system Discover how Islamic finance can help build a new debt-free economy Learn how Islamic finance theory doesn't always dictate practice Although Islamic finance is a growing market, it is still a foreign concept to many. Those within the Islamic finance circles wonder why the system has yet to gain broader appeal despite its ability to create a strong and well-balanced economy. Islamic Finance and the New Financial System provides clever analysis and historical background to put the issues into perspective.
