Trish had dreams once: dreams of graduating high school, getting into ballet school, and becoming a renowned dancer, with her parents and big brother cheering her on all the while. But those dreams died with her brother. Ever since Josh’s fatal car accident, Trish has been a shell of her former self, and her family has struggled to keep it together. Now, her father hides in his work and her mother drinks her tears away. While Trish silently blames herself for Josh’s death, both of her parents struggle with their own guilt. Neither one can look beyond their own sorrow to see how deeply Trish is hurting and needs help too. So, Trish must find a way to survive the storms of grief on her own. She learns to hide, learns to numb, and learns to bury her joy to ease her pain. But self-destruction is a desperate crutch, not a cure, and Trish knows it. As she navigates her family’s disfunction, her best friend’s own crises, and the treacherous waters of teenage romance, she must find a way to power through and dig deep—to find the strength she needs to heal before it’s too late and her family fully tears itself apart.

It is said that Josh Gibson is the only man ever to have hit a fair ball out of Yankee Stadium. Some claim he hit as many as seventy-five home runs in a season. All agreed he was a frightening hitter to face. What Satchel Paige was to pitching in the Negro leagues, Gibson was to hitting: their greatest star, biggest gate attraction, and most important symbol. Though Gibson is best remembered as "the black Babe Ruth," Ruth became a beloved symbol of the national pastime, while Gibson lived a life veiled in the darkness that came both from the shadow world of the Negro leagues and from within his own tortured soul. Mark Ribowsky, the widely acclaimed biographer of Satchel Paige, pulls no punches in his portrait of this magnificent, troubled athlete. This is the most complete, thorough, and authoritative account of the life of black ball's greatest hitter, and one of its most important stars.

Born in South Carolina, White spent his childhood as a lead boy for traveling blind bluesmen. In the early '30s he moved to New York and became a popular blues star, then introduced folk-blues to a mass white audience in the 1940s. He was famed both for his strong Civil Rights songs, which made him a favorite of the Roosevelts, and for his sexy stage persona. The king of Café Society-also home to Billie Holiday--he was the one bluesman to consistently pack the New York nightspots, and the first black singer-guitarist to act in Hollywood films and star on Broadway. In the 1950s, White's bitter compromise with the blacklisters left him with few friends on either end of the political spectrum. He spent much of the decade in Europe, then came back strong in the 1960s folk revival. By 1963, he was voted one of America's top three male folk stars, but his health was failing and he did not survive the decade. Written in an engaging style, Society Blues portrays the difficult balancing act that all black performers must face in a predominantly white culture. Through the twists and turns of White's life, it traces the evolution of the blues and folk revival, and is a must read for anyone interested in the history of American popular culture, as well as a fascinating life story. During the first half of the twentieth century, Josh Gibson was a legendary figure among black baseball players, who were barred from playing in the major leagues. Perhaps baseball's greatest hitter, Gibson was known as "the black Babe Ruth." In this illuminating biography, William Brashler introduces an authentic American sports hero and recaptures the mood and style, the excitement and poignance of a world of black baseball that has vanished from the American scene. He traces Gibson's career from the sandlots and semi-pro teams of Pittsburgh, through his debut with the Homestead Grays in 1930, and on to his untimely death in 1947 at age thirty-five—the winter after Jackie Robinson broke through the minor leagues' color barrier. With 12 pages of black-and-white photographs. "Brashler has put together a balanced account that, while deflating some of the apocryphal tales of Gibson's exploits, brings him into clear focus as one of the outstanding baseball players of his era....He emerges here as a stoic figure...totally dedicated to baseball."—New York Times Book Review. "Brashler helps to cut through the legend of a moonfaced laughing giant and give us a sense of Josh's life, in and out of baseball."—New York Review of Books.

A series of radio scripts that provide an 'alternative' re-telling of the Jesus story with a contemporary storyline that avoids everything familiar. The story of Josh Davidson and his unlikely companions, threatened by a hostile state and corrupt church, has all the essentials but might be unrecognisable as a version of the Gospel narratives. But it's still a ripping yarn in its own right. Copious notes explain the historical and theological background to the plays and how they were written.
