Six contributors explore the role of governments in accelerating the rate of forest destruction by providing direct and indirect subsidies to support what would otherwise be non-commercial logging operations. Without these financial incentives, most timber operations in the tropics would cease. In a series of country-by-country investigations, including examples from the developed and developing worlds, this book documents the government policies that are leading to the misuse of forest resources. Each is written by an authority on the county, and each contains descriptive, analytical and empirical material on key policies and their effects. The final country analysis focuses on the United States, where the consequences of the subsidized timber sales by the US Forest Service from most of the national forests are discussed. The book concludes with an overview of the impact of forest policies and the role of bilateral and multilateral agencies in their formulation. By directing attention toward the political dimension involved in forest clearance, this book will provide a clearer insight into the basic reasons why forests continue to be destroyed despite the outcry raised by conservationists.

"How are forest resources created and used? How do they contribute to our happiness? What are some of the issues in forest resource stewardship? How should these issues be addressed? What principles should be followed? What is the future of forestry? How can - and do - we affect its future?" "Such is the subject of Introduction To Forest Resource Economics." "From the "Father of Forestry Economics," this new book delivers far more than just the economics of forests. This impressive work provides readers with a realistic view of forestry economics, based on the author's experience of over 40 years in forestry. It covers a wide range of topics - carefully subdivided to enable readers to easily focus on one or more narrow topics of special interest." "Approaching forestry economics from a social science perspective and considering the human factors involved, the book includes consumers and consumers attitudes. Special emphasis is placed on the critically important areas of world forestry, nontimber forestry, and consumer economics, and an important theme of the book involves nations' interdependencies: geographic, cultural, and political."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Experts have clearly established the extent of forest decline and likely economic, social and environmental consequences. They have also discussed deforestation's principal causes...This report goes further by showing how governments, committed in principle to conservation and wise resource use, are aggravating the losses of forests under their stewardship through mistaken policies. Such policies, by and large, were adopted for worthy objectives: industrial or agricultural growth, regional development, job creation, or poverty alleviation. But, this study finds such objectives typically have not been realized or have been attained only at excessive costs.

The contributions of forests to the well-being of humankind are far-reaching. Forests provide vital wood supplies, help to combat rural poverty, and ensure food security and decent livelihoods; they offer promising mid-term green growth opportunities; and they deliver vital long-term environmental services, such as clean air and water, biodiversity and mitigation of climate change. Building on data that are more comprehensive and reliable than ever before and covering 234 countries and territories, the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2015 (FRA 2015) shows encouraging signs of improved forest management and a global slowdown in deforestation. However, these trends need to be strengthened, especially in countries that are lagging behind.
