L’articolo indaga la rilevanza della corda come strumento di “costruzione”, intendendo per costruzione un ambito che va dalla realizzazione geometrica e poi materiale dell’architettura ad alcune strutture di formazione della materia. In primo luogo viene affrontato il campo che, attraverso i movimenti della corda sul piano, lega geometria e costruzione. Nel percorso si incontrano le costruzioni di figure geometriche regolari nel cerchio, la particolare nascita del pentagono, l’origine della sezione aurea e infine la spirale logaritmica. Il logaritmo è il ponte tra costruzione geometrica e formazioni della natura. In secondo luogo si sperimentano digitalmente i movimenti nello spazio della corda secondo una spirale implementata con tecniche parametriche in Grasshopper®. Dell’esperimento vengono esplicitate le condizioni, i mezzi e i software usati per realizzarlo. Emergono dall’esperimento interessanti questioni che riguardano il tema della gravità nel formarsi della materia e anche nello sviluppo delle forme organiche. Lo scritto intende dimostrare l’efficacia dell’uso di una corda e di una spirale logaritmica tanto nella costruzione geometrica planare quanto in quella tridimensionale e aprire a ulteriori studi e sperimentazioni in questo settore. | The article studies the importance of the cord as an instrument of ‘construction’, i.e., ranging from the geometric and then physical creation of architecture to several properties of natural or artificial matters. The first issue focuses on how the movements of the cord on a plane link geometry and construction. This phase includes regular geometric figures in a circle, the special ‘birth’ of the pentagon, the origin of the golden section and finally the logarithmic spiral. The logarithm is the bridge between geometric construction and natural formations. Experiments were then carried out involving the spatial movements of the cord based on a spiral created using the parametric techniques in Grasshopper®. The conditions, equipment and software used to carry out the experiment are all illustrated. The experiment raises interesting issues about gravity and its role in the creation of matter and the development of organic forms. The essay intends to demonstrate the effectiveness of the use of a cord and logarithmic spiral not only in planar but also three-dimensional geometric constructions. The study will also, hopefully, pave the way for new studies and experiments in this sector.

First edition (1851) and the rarest of Hay's books. The Scot David Ramsay Hay (1798-1866) is best known through his many books on colour theory. He was a successful house decorator, counting Sir Walter Scott and Queen Victoria amongst his clients. Here he tackles with much gusto and energy the age old problem of proportion. His system of proportion is based upon the harmonic ratios of the diatonic scale: 'the eye is influenced, in its estimations of spaces, by a simplicity of proportions similar to that which guides the ear in its appreciation of sounds'. 'The basis of the present theory, therefore, simply is, that a figure is pleasing to the eye in the same degree as its fundamental angles bear to each other the same proportions that the vibrations bear to one another in the common chord of music'. The plates are 'representing geometric constructions and illustrations of the male and female skeletons, and muscle manikins, with the lines of proportion, after Hay's system. They are all drawn by the author and beautifully engraved by W. Forrest.
