Excerpt from A History of France It Often happens that those of us who live in great cities do not know our next door neighbors. In the great world it is very much the same and we know little or nothing about our neighbors. Hundreds of years ago a French writer called us his next neighbor. It was impossible, he said, to write about France without also writing about England. That is very true, for during hundreds of years the history of the two countries mixed and mingled. Yet in spite of that Jacques Bonhomme and John Bull have gone on liv ing side by side knowing little of each other's history, understanding little of each other's ways. For during hundreds of years France and England were deadly enemies, and Englishmen cared little about the history of France. They thought that they knew enough about Frenchmen when they knew how to fight them. But those days have long gone past, and now Jacques Bonhomme is not only our next neighbor, but our very good friend. That being so, British boys and girls are no longer con tent to know nothing about this friend, and several years ago I got a letter from a little English boy. I like that book, he said, and I wish you would write one just the same, only about France, because we can't find anything nice about France. Since then I have received many such letters both from British boys and girls and from their cousins in America. I promised them all that some day they should have the book they asked for. They were not very pleased with that promise, I think. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Empresses of France In the course of extended researches into the history of France, I first became aware of the fact that neither in French nor in English does there exist any brief yet comprehensive work giving the lives of the Queens and Empresses. The lack of such a book having proved a great annoyance to me, I felt it would perchance assist other students were I to weave my copious notes into consecutive narratives which would also interest the general public. While the Queens of France are very numerous and often insignificant, the Empresses are three women of note, whose lives extend over more than a century. As their sayings and doings form an important part of the stirring history of their time, it has seemed best to give them a volume to themselves. Josephine, Marie Louise, and Eugenie are names which call to mind endless pageants and touching or dramatic scenes, which historians, novelists, poets, and playwrights have already used in their works, and will doubtless use again. Excerpt from Facts About France Frenchman is still true to his age-long mission to be at infinite personal cost the buckler of civilization. For him life has ever been a thing of little worth if it is to be bought at the expense of liberty, of human dignity, of honour, of self-respect, of the right to live one's own life in one's own way, with no master but one's own conscience under laws accepted by free consent alone. Excerpt from The Story of France Long, long ago the land which we now call France was called Gaul. Gaul was much larger than France is to-day, although north, south, and west France has the same boundaries now as Gaul had in the far-off days of which I am going to tell you. What these boundaries are, many a geography lesson will have shown. But, lest you have forgotten, take a map of Europe, and you will see that on the north France has to protect her the English Channel, on the south she is guarded by the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, while on her west roll the waters of the Atlantic. These mountains and waters were also the bulwarks of ancient Gaul. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from France in the Twentieth Century A corrective was however necessary if he was to View France with the eye of an impartial and not a French observer. This was supplied by the fact of his being of English stock and of having benefited by continual association with men and women of his own race while still resident in France. Moreover, after completing his military service, he has passed in Great Britain the five years immediately preceding the publication of this book, so that he has been enabled to refresh the original British influence and to relieve the overwhelming weight of his early training. It need only be added that these five years have not entirely divorced the author from the land of his birth; he retained contact with it and its language by the prae tice of journalism and by following closely the march of political events in France. Thus he happens to be in a privileged position, and is willing to forgo any tolera tion which is accorded as a rule to him who treats of a foreign country.
