The study of funeral monuments is a growing field, but monuments erected to commemorate children have so far received little attention. Whilst the practice of erecting monuments to the dead was widespread across Renaissance Europe, the vast majority of these commemorated adults, with children generally only appearing as part of their parents' memorials. However, as this study reveals, in Poland there developed a very different tradition of funerary monuments designed for, and dedicated to, individual children - daughters as well as sons. The book consists of five major parts, which could be read in any order, though the overall sequencing is based on the premise that an understanding of the context and background will enhance a reading of these fascinating child monuments. Consequently, there is a progression of knowledge presented from the broader context of the earlier parts, towards the final parts where the actual child monuments are discussed in detail. Thus the book begins with an overview of the wider cultural contexts of funerary monuments and where children fitted into this. It then moves on to to look at the 'forgotten Renaissance' of central Europe and specifically the situation in Poland. The middle part addresses the 'culture of memory', examining the role of funerary monuments in reinforcing social, religious and familial continuity. The last parts deal with the physical monuments: empirical data, iconography and iconology. Through this illuminating consideration of children's monuments, the book raises a host of fascinating questions relating to Polish social and cultural life, family structure, attitudes to children and gender. It also addresses the issue of why Poland witnessed this unusual development, and what this tells us about the transmission of cultural and artistic ideas across Renaissance Europe. Drawing upon social and cultural history, visual and gender studies, the work not only asks important new questions, but provides a fresh perspective on some familiar topics and themes within Renaissance history.

Creating Academic Communities - Funeral monuments to professors at Oxford, Leiden and Tübingen, 1580-1700This volume explores 17th-century funerary monuments to professors in three North-European Protestant university towns. It deals with the historical, religious and political background of each of the universities, and subsequently analyses the monuments under thematic headings. The extensive illustrated catalogue and accompanying CD-ROM with full-colour images discusses each of the memorials separately, listing all documented memorials erected to professors in these towns, together with an inter-disciplinary approach to their interpretation, biographical data and documentary sources. It therefore constitutes an important source of information for further study of these memorials. Moreover, Stefanie Knöll proposes a typology for the study of funerary monuments, and gives a detailed examination of funerary symbolism and portraiture, also placing particular stress on the importance of inscriptions and monument location. The study argues that funerary monuments were pivotal in creating academic identities, and regards them as active mediators of the image which professors wanted to convey of themselves in order to shape and influence society. This book will form an important contribution to the understanding of the identity of professors at a time when their place in society was first established.By bringing together this scholarship on the academic world, themes of death and mourning and the actual material culture of death, this book provides both an introduction to death rituals as practised in early modern North-European university towns, and a close analysis of related funerary monuments. The latter are particularly rewarding sources for the study of culture and the expression of beliefs. For professors a group of patrons that has left few illustrated works of art funerary monuments constitute a rich source of information. The study and the catalogue are important contributions to art history, the history of European universities and the intellectual history of late northern Humanism an impressive interdisciplinary achievement and a fine work of truly comparative research - Professor Martin van Gelderen, University of SussexDr Stefanie Knöll read History of Art, and German and English studies at Tübingen. After taking an MA at Oxford Brookes University, she was awarded the European doctorate in the History of Art for the present study. She is assistant-curator at the Museum for Sepulchral Culture at Kassel, Germany. She regularly publishes on her subject both in English and in German, and has also written Die Grabdenkmale in der Stiftskirche Tübingen.ISBN 90-5976-003-4 Creating Academic Communities hardcover & CD-ROM 480 pp. appr. 150 ill. 118,75ISBN 90-5976-004-2 Creating Academic Communities paperback & CD-ROM 480 pp. appr. 150 ill. 79,40

This book takes as its subject the most important kind of surviving post-Reformation church art and English Renaissance sculpture, the carved stone funeral monument. These complex constructions, comprising sculpted figures and architectural framing, were set up in huge numbers during the years around 1600 and thousands still survive in parish churches across England. This is the first comprehensive account of the subject for over fifty years. The volume is lavishly illustrated with rare photographs and offers a valuable and informative record of one of England's greatest treasures.

This volume presents the funerary inscriptions found in the Athenian Agora between 1931 and 1968. In addition, all Agora fragments of the public casualty lists known in 1971 have been included, together with fragments associated with them but found elsewhere, although the latter are not discussed in full. Of the 1,099 inscriptions catalogued here, 238 are published for the first time. With the exception of 6 (previously published), all contain a sure name, ethnic, or demotic. In accordance with the established policy of the Excavations of the Athenian Agora, a photograph is included of every stone for which none has appeared previously. The catalogue is arranged alphabetically by demotics and ethnics; the indexes include names, tribes, geographical names, significant Greek words, and Latin words. The author's unparalleled familiarity with Attic funerary scripts enabled him to offer valuable chronological suggestions for otherwise undatable private monuments and his historical understanding gave new meaning to the public funerary monuments.
