In 1961, Portugal found itself fighting a war to retain its colonial possessions and preserve the remnants of its Empire. It was almost completely unprepared to do so, and this was particularly evident in its ability to project power and to control the vast colonial spaces of Africa. Following the uprisings of March 1961 in the north of Angola, Portugal poured troops into the colony as fast as its creaking logistic system would allow; however, these new arrivals were not competent and did not possess the skills needed to fight a counterinsurgency. While counterinsurgency by its nature requires substantial numbers of light infantry, the force must be trained in the craft of fighting a ‘small war’ to be effective. The majority of the arriving troops had no such indoctrination and had been readied at an accelerated pace. Even their uniforms were hastily crafted and not ideally suited to fighting in the bush. In reoccupying the north and addressing the enemy threat, Portugal quickly realized that its most effective forces were those with special qualifications and advanced training. Unfortunately there were only very small numbers of such elite forces. The maturing experiences of the Portuguese and their consequent adjustments to fight a counterinsurgency led to the development of specialized, tailored units to close the gaps in skills and knowledge between the insurgents and their forces. This book is about the Fuzileiros or Portuguese marines, a naval force that operated in the riverine littorals of Africa and that was both feared by the enemy and loved by those loyal to Portugal. The Fuzileiros underwent one of the longest and most physically demanding specialist infantry training regimes in the world, lasting some forty-two weeks. Perhaps only 15 to 35 percent of the inductees eventually passed the course and were awarded the traditional and highly coveted navy blue beret. When deployed to Africa, they underwent further acclimation for weeks until they were able to move through the slime and mud of a riverbank with ease, as their lives depended on it. They became experts at riverine warfare and regularly ranged inland on extended patrols, many of which are recounted here. They were comfort able with the uncomfortable fighting environment, and this ability translated into an unpredictability that the enemy feared. This book is the story of how they came to be formed and organized, the initial teething difficulties, and their unqualified successes.

Mais uma vez, estou diante de textos que desenham um pouco da Cultura local, a paisagem de nossa Marataízes. Isso é muito bom! Você visualiza a valorização de sua terra, de seu povo, de sua gente e junto a eles ter revelados um pouco do folclore, de suas crendices, superstições, o modus vivendi das pessoas do lugar. Em alguns momentos, a leitura, como a própria autora nos diz, tende a ser lúdica. E ganha essa característica, porque pode se perceber o humor leve, a piada, as brincadeiras descontraídas, que alegram o espírito e nos divertem. Partindo para outros contextos, e através das garimpagens, D. Bárbara mostra o comprometimento com o social, muito bem solidificado e levado à prática pelos Fuzileiros Navais, que por aqui transitam e prestam serviços relevantes à população sem medir esforços e contribuindo com tamanha solidariedade a fim de que povo possa ter uma vida melhor nas áreas de Educação e Saúde. Grandes relatos são expostos nas páginas do livro. Momentos em que a autora conclama as pessoas a fazer uma reflexão. Confesso que, mesmo sendo professor de Literatura e Redação, tive uma certa dificuldade para classificar o livro em um único e específico Gênero Textual. Sua autora escreveu textos bem diversificados, que inclui Crônicas, Contos, Causos , artigos e, como não podia faltar: poemas, impregnados de uma poesia tendendo a um certo erotismo implícito em conjecturas e, talvez, só mesmo na imaginação, mas podendo se materializar na mente do leitor, dependendo do modo como cada um ler os textos. Existem leituras e leitura, e o texto literário, no seu subjetivismo e ambiguidade, permite a cada pessoas fazer a análise e interpretação que melhor lhe convier, porém considerando sempre a coerência e lógica. Em uma das passagens do livro, lê-se o seguinte: Todo poeta tem uma enorme força que o rege e o guia pelos lúdicos e devassos pensamentos. Foi este um dos procedimentos da autora, pois guiada pelo entusiasmo, pela emoção e pela imaginação centrada nessa força, ela se deixou levar pelos lúdicos e devassos pensamentos no momento em que criou os textos e fez a catarse de tudo aquilo que estava preso em seu ser. Aconteceu a libertação! Então, leitor, leia o livro e tire suas conclusões! Divirta-se, e fique informado sobre o que se tem feito, solidariamente, em nossa região. Este livro trata da atuação dos Fuzileiros Portugueses, um corpo militar com quase quatro séculos de tradição, criado em 1621 com o Terço da Armada, reorganizado como Brigada Real de Marinha em 1797, depois Regimento da Armada, Batalhão Naval, Brigada da Guarda Naval, etc., até ser dissolvido em 1926. Em 1961 este corpo foi novamente reativado, com elementos da Marinha enviados a treinar nas Marinhas Francesa e Britânica e com a criação da Escola de Fuzileiros no Vale de Zebro. O primeiro destacamento de Fuzileiros Especiais (o DFE 1) é enviado em outubro de 1961 para Angola. Durante 13 anos de guerra, 12 500 fuzileiros combateram no designado Ultramar e 154 deixaram as suas vidas em África, 74 em combate. O heroísmo dos Fuzileiros foi lembrado com a entrega de quatro ordens da Torre e Espada, 12 medalhas de Valor Militar com Palma, 156 Cruzes de Guerra e 49 medalhas de Serviços Distintos com Palma.
