Es gibt dort Zombies, umgekehrte Welten, verrückte Violinvirtuosen, gutwillige Dämonen und viele sagenhafte Figuren mehr, die jedoch nur eine Aufgabe haben, nämlich zu zeigen, daß kontrafaktische Annahmen eine Interpretation der uns bekannten Welt unterstützen können. Ist es grundsätzlich möglich, daß eine Maschine denken kann? Kann eine Maschine "so tun", als könne sie denken? Ist es möglich, daß ein menschlicher Gesprächspartner nicht bemerkt, daß er sich mit einem Roboter unterhält? Ausgehend von diesen Fragen befaßt sich Albrecht Behmel in seiner Untersuchung mit den Gedankenexperimenten in der Erforschung der Artificial Intelligence und der Philosophy of Mind. Dabei steht die Beschreibung einer Methode im Vordergrund, anhand derer die Brauchbarkeit von Gedankenexperimenten gemessen werden kann. Wie unterscheiden sich Gedankenexperimente? Welche Rolle spielt der literarische Charakter dieser philosophischen Gattung? Welche Rolle spielt es, wenn ein Gedankenexperiment im Grund nachgespielt werden könnte? Fakt ist, in Paracas in Peru wurden Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts Gräber entdeckt mit menschlichen Skeletten, die eine höchst ungewöhnliche Schädel-Form aufwiesen, sehr in die Länge gezogen, etwas größer als gewöhnliche Homo Sapiens Schädel. Etwa 200 davon liegen in Peruanischen Musen. Auch in anderen Gegenden der Welt wurden vergleichbare Funde gemacht, etwa in Mesopotamien. Die abwiegelnde Haltung der Mainstream-Archäologen, des handle sich um schlichte Schädel-Deformationen, wie sie überall auf der Welt in primitiven Kulturen vollzogen werden, ist indes nicht stichhaltig. Das Buch befasst sich mit folgenden spannenden Gedankenspielen: ## Was hat es mit den Paracas Schädeln auf sich? This book offers a readable introduction to the main aspects of thought experimenting in philosophy and science (together with related imaginative activities in mathematics and linguistics). It presents the main options in understanding thought experiments, from empiricism to Platonism, and discusses their strengths and weaknesses. However, it also provides some original perspectives on the topic. Firstly, it provides a new definition and analysis of thought experimenting that brings it closer to laboratory experimenting. Secondly, it develops the author’s earlier theory of “mental modelling”, proposed some decades ago by him, and some other researchers in the field as the crucial procedure in thought experimenting. The mental modelling approach links work with thought experimenting to cognitive science and to research on mental simulation which is a hot topic in present-day research. Thirdly, it proposes a principled way to respond to criticism of thought experimenting by “experimental philosophers” as they have been dominating the present-day debates. The response suggests a possible ameliorative, self-help project for thought experimenting. Finally, the book provides a way to systematize the history of important thought experiments in science and philosophy and thus connects, in an original way, the systematic investigation of experimenting to the historical work of famous thought experiments. It is of interest to scholars interested in history of ideas and philosophy of science.
