This is the first ever documented study of the 1,035 identifiable Greek city states (poleis) of the Archaic and Classical periods (c.650-325 BC). Previous studies of the Greek polis have focused on Athens and Sparta, and the result has been a view of Greek society dominated by Sophokles', Plato's, and Demosthenes' view of what the polis was. This study includes descriptions of Athens and Sparta, but its main purpose is to explore the history and organization of the thousand other city states. The main part of the book is a regionally organized inventory of all identifiable poleis covering the Greek world from Spain to the Caucasus and from the Crimea to Libya. This inventory is the work of 47 specialists, and is divided into 46 chapters, each covering a region. Each chapter contains an account of the region, a list of second-order settlements, and an alphabetically ordered description of the poleis. This description covers such topics as polis status, territory, settlement pattern, urban centre, city walls and monumental architecture, population, military strength, constitution, alliance membership, colonization, coinage, and Panhellenic victors. The first part of the book is a description of the method and principles applied in the construction of the inventory and an analysis of some of the results to be obtained by a comparative study of the 1,035 poleis included in it. The ancient Greek concept of polis is distinguished from the modern term `city state', which historians use to cover many other historic civilizations, from ancient Sumeria to the West African cultures absorbed by the nineteenth-century colonializing powers. The focus of this project is what the Greeks themselves considered a polis to be.

A Systems Theory of Religion, still unfinished at Niklas Luhmann's death in 1998, was first published in German two years later thanks to the editorial work of André Kieserling. One of Luhmann's most important projects, it exemplifies his later work while redefining the subject matter of the sociology of religion. Religion, for Luhmann, is one of the many functionally differentiated social systems that make up modern society. All such subsystems consist entirely of communications and all are "autopoietic," which is to say, self-organizing and self-generating. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden erstmals die Konstrukte Burnout, berufsbezogene Belastungsmuster und Social Support bei dienstunfahigen Lehrkraften standardisiert untersucht. Theoretische Grundlage dieser Arbeit waren das Burnout-Modell von Maslach und Jackson (1981, 1996), sowie das Modell von Schaarschmidt und Fischer (2001, 2003) zu arbeitsbezogenen Verhaltens- und Erlebensmustern. Ferner wurde als weiteres Merkmal die Auspragung sozialer Unterstutzung erfasst. Ein erheblicher Anteil der untersuchten Lehrkrafte konnte dem burnout-relevanten Belastungsmuster B zugeordnet werden. Es zeigten sich signifikante Unterschiede zuungunsten der weiblichen Teilnehmer sowohl beim Belastungsmuster B, als auch bei der Emotionalen Erschopfung, als Leitdimension fur Burnout. Der uberwiegende Teil der untersuchten Lehrkrafte befand sich in einem Burnout-Prozess, wobei dieser bei der Halfte der Probanden sehr weit fortgeschritten war. Burnout und Belastungsmuster standen in einem engen Zusammenhang. Dienstunfahige Lehrkrafte erfuhren kaum soziale Unterstutzung durch ihre Kollegen oder durch Institutionen, wie der Schule oder dem Dienstherrn. Der signifikant haufigste Support wurde durch den Partner geleistet, der somit die Hauptlast der Unterstutzungsleistung trug. Es ist davon auszugehen, dass psychische Belastungen und speziell Burnout eine weitaus grossere Rolle bei vorzeitiger Dienstunfahigkeit spielen, als sich dies in den Ergebnissen retrospektiver Studien schon darstellt. Zudem wird deutlich, dass Grundeinstellungen der Personlichkeit in engem Zusammenhang mit dem Auftreten von Burnout stehen.

Secret-keeping is a seemingly unavoidable part of human interaction, from governments to married couples. Unlike privacy, which in the West is considered a healthy characteristic of the autonomous adult, secrets are often troublesome, creating distorted perceptions and strained relationships. Secrets, moreover, are complex. They differ in significance (a surprise party versus hidden incest), in the ways they shape family relationships (who knows what about whom), in their location (between family members or between the family and society), and in their effects on individual functioning (Does the secret affect only one relationship or the overall way the individual responds to others?). Because of this complexity, secrets are resistant to simple "rules": Therapy must comprise more than opening up the secret or addressing only the context and not the content or vice versa. Therapists are confronted with the difficult task of examining their own values regarding secrecy while, at the same time, providing an effective therapeutic environment. Practical issues of individual safety, the meaning of the secret for the family, the therapist's attitude towards secrets in general and the family's secret in particular - all must be considered in order for treatment to be effective. Here, Imber-Black and her contributors offer a vast array of approaches to helping families deal with secrets involving sexuality, race, violence, parentage, substance abuse, illness, and death. The contributors explore the therapeutic, social, and political issues of secrets, while always keeping families firmly in mind. Through the many case examples, they show us how families, at first constricted by the need tomaintain secrecy, can gain strength through greater openness. Part I sets the stage by defining secrets and their often shame-bound origins. Part II examines secrets throughout the family life cycle: in couples, between parents and children, and with loss.
