Genesi Genesio Geneseo: A Family History is a book about the legacy of two Italian immigrants more than a century after their arrival in America. This family genealogy is a historical account of the trials and tribulations experienced by two Italian immigrants from the late 19th century through World War II, and the rewards reaped by their descendants because of the love and loyalty they had for their adoptive country. Genesi and Cesira Geneseo and their children built a solid foundation for those who would follow. As of December 31, 2015, Genesi and Cesira have 78 direct descendants who were born in the United States and we are all grateful to them for what we have and for who we are. In appreciation for the rights and responsibilities we have inherited, many of have served in the nation's Armed Forces, and one of us died for his country during the war in Vietnam. We have also contributed in the fields of agriculture, education, administration, medicine, science, law, technology, music, creative writing, finance, transportation, construction, public service, cosmetology, culinary art, home management, child development, athletics, industry and business. May those who struggled and sacrificed for our birthrights be always remembered by those who follow.

Introduzione Il sito dove si sviluppò il borgo di San Genesio fu da sempre particolare per il suo ruolo di crocevia, di snodo stradale: in età romana vi doveva passare la via Quintia, che da Pisa raggiungeva Firenze, mentre poco distante scorrevano l’Arno e l’Elsa, altre importanti vie di comunicazione; a partire dall’altomedioevo vi si aggiunse la via Francigena (fig. 1). Partendo da questa peculiarità, abbiamo deciso di illustrare le trasformazioni del sito, così come sono emerse dagli scavi archeologici condotti tra il 2001 e il 2007, in una forma meno consueta, un po’ inedita, non diretta, ma mediata: le varie fasi di frequentazione saranno descritte, di volta in volta, di epoca in epoca, attraverso gli occhi di diverse figure di pellegrini, quelli che effettivamente o verosimilmente sarebbero potuti passare da questo crocevia. Al testo del catalogo si accompagna poi una serie di box dove sono approfonditi alcuni temi specifici, che vanno dalle sepolture, alla monetazione, dall’alimentazione al gioco. Poiché la nostra storia inizia dal V secolo dobbiamo ricorrere, per cominciare il nostro racconto, a figure di pellegrini meno note, perlomeno al grande pubblico: quelle che iniziarono a viaggiare lungo le strade che portavano a Gerusalemme o verso altri luoghi santi, poco dopo l’apertura al Cristianesimo dell’imperatore Costantino, lo stesso che restaurò la città di Gerusalemme, costruendovi due basiliche a ricordo della passione e della resurrezione di Cristo, eresse la basilica della Natività a Betlemme e concesse una ricca donazione a papa Silvestro perché si edificasse a Roma la basilica del Laterano, oggi S. Giovanni. I pellegrini che iniziarono a mettersi in cammino nella tarda antichità, di cui abbiamo ricordo nelle fonti scritte, non erano quelli raffigurati dagli affreschi medievali vestiti con pochi stracci, con in capo un grande cappello e in mano un bastone. I testi antichi ci parlano invece di figure aristocratiche, perlopiù donne. Ecco allora che incontriamo Elena, la madre dell’imperatore Costantino, il cui nome si lega addirittura alla riscoperta delle reliquie della santa Croce, Eutropia, madre dell’imperatrice Fausta, la ricca Poemenia e le aristocratiche romane Melania Seniore e Paola che fondarono monasteri in Terrasanta. Partendo dai dati realmente emersi dallo scavo, proprio descrivendo l’immaginario viaggio di questi pellegrini abbiamo deciso di illustrare la storia e le caratteristiche del borgo di San Genesio. Iniziamo quindi il nostro racconto, partendo proprio dalle ricche e aristocratiche pellegrine del periodo tardoantico.
