On Religion is a major text for the development of modern religious thought in the West and its author, German theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher, is remembered as the Father of Modern Protestant Theology, as well as for his contributions to philosophy, ethics and hermeneutics. Comprising five lively speeches, which defend religion as a universal element of human life, the text was addressed to the young intellectual elite of early nineteenth-century Berlin. It demonstrates Schleiermacher's critique of Kant's religious and moral thought, while also showing his indebtedness to the divergent movements of Enlightenment rationalism and Romanticism.

Friedrich Schleiermacher Between Enlightenment And Romanticism written by Richard Crouter and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-22 with Religion categories.

Friedrich Schleiermacher's groundbreaking work in theology and philosophy was forged in the cultural ferment of Berlin at the convergence of the Enlightenment and Romanticism. The three sections of this book include illuminating sketches of Schleiermacher's relationship to contemporaries (Mendelssohn, Hegel and Kierkegaard), his work as public theologian (dialogue on Jewish emancipation, founding the University of Berlin) as well as the formation and impact of his two most famous books, On Religion: Speeches to its Cultured Despisers and The Christian Faith. Richard Crouter examines Schleiermacher's stance regarding the status of doctrine, Church and political authority, and the place of theology among the academic disciplines. Dedicated to the Protestant Church in the line of Calvin, Schleiermacher was equally a man of the university who brought the highest standards of rationality, linguistic sensitivity and a sense of history to bear upon religion.

Fifteen Sermons Of Friedrich Schleiermacher Delivered To Celebrate The Beginning Of A New Year written by Friedrich Schleiermacher and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with New Year sermons categories.

Dr. Edwina Lawler has produced an accurate translation of 15 sermons delivered by Friedrich Schleiermacher to celebrate the beginning of a new year. She has also included translations of 4 sermons outlines. Of these, 12 are based upon New Testament and 7 upon Old Testament passages. Because these sermons were delivered over a 43-year period of time, one is able to get a glimpse of Schleiermacher at many stages along the way at a number of important historical junctures in German history, starting with the first New Year's Sermon in 1791when he was only a 22-year-old tutor in Schlobitten in East Prussia, until 1834 when, just a few weeks before his death at the age of 65, the master preacher and theologian Schleiermacher delivered his last sermon inaugurating the new year in Berlin. Lawler's translations are introduced by an analysis of his sermons within the framework of other writings dealing with similar themes: To Cecilia, On What Gives Value to Life, Soliloquies and Christmas Eve - a Dialogue. The New Year sermons are then analyzed according to the following themes: self-improvement; childlike trust in God; fear of the Lord; wisdom; love; the force of love; pleasing another; Christ as teacher; and the reign of God. This work is aimed not only at specialists but also at the more general reader by having translated all German in her introduction into English. She has provided detailed annotations throughout as well as an analytical index, which includes biblical references. This book should be useful to scholars and preachers for years to come.

Known as the father of modern theology, Schleiermacher was equally at home in the theological systems of Protestant orthodoxy and the new world of thought shaped by the historical and natural sciences and German philosophy. This ease in different theological frameworks is clearly shown in his discussion of the wide range of themes in dogmatics. This volume outlines Schleiermacher's views on every major doctrine of orthodox Christianity. This classic work in systematic theology remains an indispensable volume to any student of theology, and especially for those who want to understand liberal theology. This Cornerstones edition has a new preface written by Professor Paul T. Nimmo, a well-known expert on Schleiermacher and his contribution to theology.

This collection of essays stages a dialogue between Friedrich Schleiermacher and Alfred North Whitehead on significant features of 'open' system. The volume offers new options for rehabilitating system for future theological and philosophical thinking by opening system to a flexible relation with changing reality. Key ingredients for system are discussed in three areas of contact between Schleiermacher and Whitehead. One such ingredient concerns historical precedents figuring crucially in Western systematic philosophy. Another feature is the systematic categorization of experience that relates epistemology, metaphysics, and the empirical sciences. System is also brought to bear on pressing contemporary issues, such as ethics and religious pluralism.

The aim of this volume is to assess Friedrich Schleiermacher’s contribution to the theory of translation two centuries after his address “On the Different Methods of Translating” at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin, and to explore its potential for generating future innovative work. For the first time this classic text forms the object of a focused, interdisciplinary approach. Scholars of philosophy and translation, working in English, French and German, provide a close reading of Schleiermacher’s lecture and combine their efforts in order to highlight the fundamental role translation plays in his hermeneutic thinking and the importance of hermeneutics for his theorisation of translation, within the historical and literary context of Romanticism. The various contributions revisit key concepts in Schleiermacher’s thought, in particular the famous metaphor of movement; examine the relation between his theoretical writings and his practice as translator of Plato, unearthing some of their philosophical and linguistic implications; discuss Schleiermacher’s reception in Germany and abroad; and assess the relevance of his ideas in the beginning of the 21st century as well as their potential to inspire further research in translation and interpreting.

Schleiermacher S Plato written by Julia A. Lamm and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-08 with Religion categories.

Friedrich Schleiermacher’s Platons Werke (1804–28) changed how we understand Plato. His translation of Plato’s dialogues remained the authoritative one in the German-speaking world for two hundred years, but it was his interpretation of Plato and the Platonic corpus, set forth in his Introductions to the dialogues, that proved so revolutionary for classicists and philosophers worldwide. Schleiermacher created a Platonic question for the modern world. Yet, in Schleiermacher studies, surprisingly little is known about Schleiermacher’s deep engagement with Plato. Schleiermacher’s Plato is the first book-length study of the topic. It addresses two basic questions: How did Schleiermacher understand Plato? In what ways was Schleiermacher’s own thought influenced by Plato? Lamm argues that Schleiermacher’s thought was profoundly influenced by Plato, or rather by his rather distinctive understanding of Plato. This is true not only of Schleiermacher’s philosophy (Hermeneutics, Dialectics) but also of his thinking about religion and Christian faith during the first decade of the nineteenth century (Christmas Dialogue, Speeches on Religion). Schleiermacher’s Plato should be of interest to classicists, philosophers, theologians, and scholars of religion.
