Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: The global pharmaceutical industry has been a great success story in recent years. The pharmaceutical industry s innovative power has significantly contributed to the improvement of the quality of health care. Medical innovations have completely transformed the treatment paradigm, have dramatically increased individuals chances of surviving certain diseases such as cancer and heart disease, and have reduced the likelihood and impact of diseases such as HIV/AIDS or arteriosclerosis. From a business perspective, the pharmaceutical industry has been the most profitable one during the last decade. With a median profit margin of 17 percent compared to 3.1 percent for all other industries on the Fortune 500 list, and representing 20 percent of all global research and development (R&D) investments as well as generating revenues of over USD 700 billion, the pharmaceutical industry has visibly shaped the global business world. However, the pharmaceutical industry is facing an increasingly volatile and uncertain environment. Evolving challenges such as an increase in regulatory state interference including the cost containment measures of health care reform, decreasing R&D productivity, and many blockbusters going off-patent are just some examples of the complexity and upheaval the industry is exposed to. Due to the increasing complexity and volatility, traditional planning tools are no longer suitable to adequately support conventional decision-making processes, since they insufficiently take uncertainty into account. This problem can be resolved by implementing scenario-based planning. This tool is applied to depict possible future scenarios, i.e., to identify a wide range of possible developments, which makes it a suitable tool in a volatile and complex environment. Hence, the objective of this thesis is to develop four plausible scenarios and secondly, to determine a core strategy, as well as strategic options for the pharmaceutical industry in Germany. First, an overview of the pharmaceutical industry in Germany is presented and major industry-related opportunities and challenges examined. Second, the theoretical foundation of scenario-based planning and its methodology is discussed. The HHL scenario-based approach to strategic planning is presented and briefly explained. Despite the large number of books and studies written about Metternich, there is still a period of his political career that scholars neglect to this day, the 1840s. This book offers an analysis of Metternich's German policy in the years 1840–1848 and thus fills a gap in Metternich studies. Analysing this period is important due to the fact that over the course of those less than nine years, Metternich lost his influence within the German Confederation. He represented a certain way of behaving – moderate, calm and reconciliatory – but it was an attitude which was rejected during the period of rising mass nationalism. Nevertheless, he continued to endeavour to steer this escalating nationalism, and by applying calming policies prevent it from causing armed conflicts in Europe. Since Metternich conceived the German Confederation at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 as one of the pillars of the European peace settlement, the issue is viewed from the perspective of European crises of the time, from the Rhine Crisis to the Swiss civil war. Similarly, it presents his policy in a broader context of economic and social history. The book follows revisionist research on Metternich and refutes some of the clichés still associated with his policy.

This white paper is part of a series that promotes knowledge about language technology and its potential. It addresses educators, journalists, politicians, language communities and others. The availability and use of language technology in Europe varies between languages. Consequently, the actions that are required to further support research and development of language technologies also differ for each language. The required actions depend on many factors, such as the complexity of a given language and the size of its community. META-NET, a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission, has conducted an analysis of current language resources and technologies. This analysis focused on the 23 official European languages as well as other important national and regional languages in Europe. The results of this analysis suggest that there are many significant research gaps for each language. A more detailed expert analysis and assessment of the current situation will help maximise the impact of additional research and minimize any risks. META-NET consists of 54 research centres from 33 countries that are working with stakeholders from commercial businesses, government agencies, industry, research organisations, software companies, technology providers and European universities. Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategic research agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020.

Zitovás literary analysis starts at the interface of Czech and German literature in the first half of the twentieth century. Thomas Mann's novel Joseph and His Brothers is set in comparative relation to Ivan Olbracht's prose texts Nikola ?uhaj loupe?ník and Golet v údolí. Olbracht translated three volumes of Mann's Joseph's tetralogy parallel to the composition of his own prose works. Zitová examines the influence of Olbracht's translation work on his own work. Zitovás literaturwissenschaftliche Analyse setzt an einer Schnittstelle der tschechischen und deutschen Literatur in der ersten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts an. Thomas Manns Roman Joseph und seine Brüder wird vergleichend in Beziehung gesetzt zu Ivan Olbrachts in den dreißiger Jahren entstandenen Prosatexten Nikola ?uhaj loupe?ník und Golet v údolí. Olbracht übersetzte parallel zur Abfassung seiner Prosawerke insgesamt drei Bände aus Manns umfangreicher Josephs-Tetralogie. Diese Übersetzertätigkeit blieb, wie Zitová aufzeigt, nicht ohne Einfluss auf sein eigenes Schaffen. Das Buch knüpft an eine von Jirí Opelík geschriebene Studie Olbrachts reife Schaffensperiode sub specie seiner Übersetzungen aus Thomas Mann und Lion Feuchtwanger (1967) an, in der dieser tschechische Literaturwissenschaftler das Thema eröffnete. Mit Zitovás Tiefenanalyse schließt sich diese germanobohemistische Forschungslücke.
