Excerpt from Geschichte der Botanik in Bohmen Auf Grund meiner Iiistoriscli-botnniscln-n Arbeiten wurde ich von den Herren Uni v.-Prof. Dr. K. W. von Dalla Torre und von dem um die Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften in Bohmen hochverdienten Sani-tfitsrale Dr. Adalbert Wrany angeeifert, die Geschichte der Botanik in Bohmen zu bearbeiten. Mit Freude unterzog ich midi dieser Aufgabe, da seil Kaspar von Sternbergs "Abhandlung uber die Pflanzenkunde in Bohmen," die in den Abhandlungen der kgl. bohmischen Gesellschaft, der Wissenschaften, G. Band, 1817 und 1818 erschien, kein Werk veroffentlicht. wurde, das die Geschichte der Botanik in Bohmen behandelt, uberdies Graf Sternbergs Arbeit nur die Zeit bis Mattioli berucksichtigt. Opiz' Piegesten, "Beitrage zu einer chronologischen Geschichte der Botanik in Bohmen," Prag 182G, wurden nur zum Teile dem Drucke ubergeben. Es ist mir ein Vergnugen zu gestehen, dass ich bei meiner Arbeit allseits die bereitwilligste und freundlichste Unterstutzung fand; denn mit welchen Schwierigkeiten zumal bei der weiten Entfernung grosserer Bibliotheken derartige Arbeiten verbunden sind, wird der ermessen, der sich mit ahnlichen Arbeiten beschaftigt. Ermunternd wirkten die zahlreichen anerkennenden Schreiben, die mir von massgebender Seile zuteil geworden waren, so von den p. t. Herren Universitatsprofessoren Dr. P. Ascherson in Berlin, Di-. G. Beck von Mannagetla und Dr. L. Cela-kovsky in Prag. Dr. lv. W. von Dalla Torre in Innsbruck, Di-. P. A. Saccardo in Padua, Dr. V. Schiffner in Wien, von dem Kustos des konigl. Herbariums Herrn Dr. Bernh. Schorler in Dresden, sowie von dem Fachreferenten Herrn Prof. F. Malouschek in Reichenberg. Vielfache Unterstutzung fand ich bei der Arbeit durch Herrn Sanitatsral Dr. Wrany, der mir freundschaftlichst an die Hand ging, mir vielfach Beitrage lieferte und mir seine ganze reichhaltige Bibliothek zur Verfugung stellte. Ihn, den Verfasser der Geschichte der Mineralogie und der Geschichte der Chemie in Bohmen, der mir leider zu plotzlich und unerwartet durch den Tod entrissen wurde, werde ich stets 11 dank-bnrslem Andenken behallen.
