Franciscus de Mayronis (1285-1328) steht am Anfang einer Tradition, in der sich im Ausgang vom Werk des Johannes Duns Scotus eine Metaphysikkonzeption eigenen Zuschnitts herausbildet. An die Stelle der Grundbegriffe der aristotelischen Substanzontologie treten die beiden fundamentalen metaphysischen Grundgrossen des formalen Gehaltes (formalitas) und der inneren modalen Bestimmung (modus intrinsecus). Die aristotelische Grundannahme einer analogen Pradikation der allgemeinsten metaphysischen Begriffe wird durch eine Theorie der univoken Aussagbarkeit transzendentaler Pradikate ersetzt. An die Stelle einer neuplatonisch gefarbten Partizipationsmetaphysik tritt in konsequenter Weise eine als Transzendentalwissenschaft verstandene Konzeption der ersten Philosophie. Im Werk des Franciscus de Mayronis werden die Weichenstellungen vorgenommen, dem zweiten bedeutenden Metaphysikansatz des Mittelalters, der auf Johannes Duns Scotus zuruckgeht, seine uber Jahrhunderte hinweg wirksame Form zu geben. Die Wirkung dieses Entwurfes entfaltet sich zunachst unmittelbar in der Ausein-andersetzung mit der zeitgenossischen nominalistisch motivierten Kritik innerhalb der scotistischen Schultradition selbst und halt bis ins 18. Jahrhundert an. Durch viele Vermittlungsgestalten hindurch lasst sich aber auch eine weit daruber hinausgehende Wirksamkeit nachweisen, die bis in die Gegenwart reicht.
