Bertolt Brecht's Me-ti, which remained unpublished in his own lifetime, now appears for the first time in English. Me-ti counselled against 'constructing too complete images of the world'. For this work of fragments and episodes, Brecht accumulated anecdotes, poems, personal stories and assessments of contemporary politics. Given its controversial nature, he sought a disguise, using the name of a Chinese contemporary of Socrates, known today as Mozi. Stimulated by his humorous aphoristic style and social focus, as well as an engrained Chinese awareness of the flow of things, Brecht developed a practical, philosophical, anti-systematic ethics, discussing Marxist dialectics, Lenin, Hitler, Stalin, the Moscow trials, and the theories behind current events, while warning how ideology makes people the 'servants of priests'. Me-ti is central to an understanding of Brecht's critical reflections on Marxist dialectics and his commitment to change and the non-eternal, the philosophy which informs much of his writing and his most famous plays, such as The Good Person of Szechwan. The Protestant pastor Gustav Adolf Warneck (1834-1910) is considered the father of German missiology. This even applies to the Catholic area. In 1874, together with Theodor Christlieb and Reinhold Grundemann, he founded the Allgemeine Missions-Zeitschrift, which essentially led the cooperation between the mission societies in conferences, etc. and finally resulted in a merger of the German evangelical missions into an umbrella organization. As a retired pastor, he was appointed professor of missiology at the University of Halle in 1896 until his retirement in 1908, the first chair of this kind in the German-speaking area. The monumental 'Mission Doctrine', which has been published since 1892, is the fruit of his life's work and is still groundbreaking today. Warneck is also a stroke of luck for German-speaking Protestant missiology, because after the emigration of the Working Group of Evangelical Missions (AEM) from the Evangelical Missionswerk (EMW) and despite the existence of the Evangelical Working Group for Mission, Religion and Culture (afem) alongside the Germans Society for Missiology (DGMW) is held in honor by both sides as the father of missiology. Due to the German adaptation of the document "Christian Witness in a Multi-Religious World", which the Vatican, World Council of Churches and World Evangelical Alliance signed jointly in 2011, EMW and AEM, as well as DGMW and afem have come back into conversation. How and why did Europe spawn dictatorships and violence in the first half of the twentieth century, and then, after 1945 in the west and after 1989 in the east, create successful civilian societies? In this book, Volker Berghahn explains the rise and fall of the men of violence whose wars and civil wars twice devastated large areas of the European continent and Russia--until, after World War II, Europe adopted a liberal capitalist model of society that had first emerged in the United States, and the beginnings of which the Europeans had experienced in the mid-1920s. Berghahn begins by looking at how the violence perpetrated in Europe's colonial empires boomeranged into Europe, contributing to the millions of casualties on the battlefields of World War I. Next he considers the civil wars of the 1920s and the renewed rise of militarism and violence in the wake of the Great Crash of 1929. The second wave of even more massive violence crested in total war from 1939 to 1945 that killed more civilians than soldiers, and this time included the industrialized murder of millions of innocent men, women, and children in the Holocaust. However, as Berghahn concludes, the alternative vision of organizing a modern industrial society on a civilian basis--in which people peacefully consume mass-produced goods rather than being 'consumed' by mass-produced weapons--had never disappeared. With the United States emerging as the hegemonic power of the West, it was this model that finally prevailed in Western Europe after 1945 and after the end of the Cold War in Eastern Europe as well.
