Ganz besonders interessierte ihn der Zeitraum von der Einberufung seines Vaters zum Wehrdienst bis zu seiner Rückkehr aus der Kriegsgefangenschaft. Durch den Tod beider Elternteile kann der Autor sich nun ohne das Gefühl, persönliche Grenzen zu überschreiten, mit diesen Schriftstücken auseinandersetzen. Aus den sehr privaten Schriftstücken sind für ihn vielmehr Zeitdokumente geworden, die er der Öffentlichkeit in diesem Buch zugänglich machen möchte.
