Miller und Stephen Rollnick entwickelt und fand mit der Publikation des Standardwerks "Motivational Interviewing" eine schnelle Verbreitung. In Deutschland wird das Verfahren seit etwa 15 Jahren eingesetzt und breitet sich zunehmend in den Bereichen Fuhrung, Beratung, Therapie und Pflege aus. Das Beratungskonzept baut auf den humanistischen Therapieschulen auf und integriert verschiedene Konzepte und Methoden unterschiedlicher Therapierichtungen. Humanistische Ansatze der Motivierenden Gesprachsfuhrung finden sich in der Personlichkeitstheorie von Carl Rogers wieder. Rogers Leitgedanken sind das Streben des Menschen nach Selbstverwirklichung und Selbstaktualisierung. Eine Integration der gemachten Erfahrungen kann nur dann gelingen, wenn diese Erfahrungen mit dem Selbst kongruent sind. Gelingt diese Anpassung nicht, entsteht Spannung und der Mensch reagiert mit Angsten und Verteidigungsstrategien. Ziel des Beratungsprozesses ist, die lebensweltlichen Erfahrungen dem Selbst anzupassen in einem von positiver Wertschatzung, emotionaler Warme, Akzeptanz und einfuhlendem Verstehen gepragten beraterischen und therapeutischen Stil.
