This work examines the Gilmore Girls from a post-feminist perspective, evaluating how the show's main female characters and supporting cast fit into the classic portrayal of feminine identity on popular television. The book begins by placing Gilmore Girls in the context of the history of feminism and feminist television shows such as Mary Tyler Moore and One Day at a Time. The remainder of the essays look at series' portrayal of traditional and non-traditional gender identities and familial relationships. Topics include the hyper-real utopia represented by Gilmore Girls' fictional Stars Hollow; the faux-feminist perspective offered by Rory Gilmore's unfulfilling (and often masochistic) romantic relationships; the ways in which "mean girl" Paris Geller both adheres to and departs from the traditional archetype of female power and aggression; and the role of Lorelai Gilmore's oft-criticized marriage in destroying the show's central theme of single motherhood during its seventh season. The work also studies the role of food and its consumption as a narrative device throughout the show's development, evaluating the ways in which food negotiates, defines, and upholds the characters' gendered and class performances. The work also includes a complete episode guide listing the air date, title, writer, and director of every episode in the series.

No longer just a cult classic, Gilmore Girls is a cultural staple for TV fans. Airing from 2000–2007, Gilmore Girls focused on the relationship between thirty-something single mom Lorelai and her teenage daughter, Rory. While exploring themes of family, romantic love, friendship, and life’s choices, this quirky show featured fast-paced dialogue, funny quips, and a steady stream of pop-culture references. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Gilmore Girls served as a launching pad for the careers of its stars—including Lauren Graham, Melissa McCarthy, Alexis Bledel, Jared Padalecki, and Milo Ventimiglia. The series’ popularity was so enduring that ten years after its initial run, a revival season was released on Netflix. In Gilmore Girls: A Cultural History, Lara C. Stache and Rachel Davidson offer an engaging analysis of the popular series. The authors examine how the show serves as a representation of American culture and politics, reflects complexity within multiple mother-daughter dynamics, and employed literature, movies, and music to drive the dialogue and plot. They also explore how the choices made in the series reflect social values of the time, reinforce and challenge traditional ideas of gender and feminism, and unpack the cultural significance of this endearing series. As both a mirror and a construction of contemporary American culture, the series achieved critical accolades and became a cult classic, at once both unassuming and dynamic. This book offers new ways for fans to appreciate the appeal and value of this binge-worthy favorite as part of the larger culture in which it exists. Gilmore Girls: A Cultural History will be of interest to fans of the show as well as to scholars and students of television, media, and American popular culture.

But I'm a Gilmore! is a never-before-seen collection of stories and experiences from members of the cast, and crew who worked on Gilmore Girls, as well as Gilmore Girls fans―how they came to the show, why it resonates, and what it means to them - their 'Gilmore story'. This book takes shape in three main sections: the three 'C's: Cast and Crew: It's a Show Creators: It's a Lifestyle Cult Followers: It's a Religion The first section 'Cast and Crew' contains the Gilmore stories of producers, editors, directors, cameramen, costumers, dialogue coaches, and of course, actors. This section takes you on a journey through the memories of those whose role on the show was integral, but who have previously been overlooked. This is especially true for crew members, some of whom were present full-time over many years, but who have not shared their experiences of working on the show until now. The second section, 'Creators' is focused on those fans whose love for Gilmore Girls has been so profound that they have turned their interest in the show into some kind of work, hobby, or passion project - into a lifestyle. In this section you will read about how the Fan Fest Society (formerly Gilmore Girls Fan Fest) came together, how one man decided to compile a list of every location on the show, how one woman opened a Gilmore Girls themed furniture store, and how fans became merchants of Gilmore Girls inspired items. The third and final section, 'Cult Fans' explores the Gilmore stories of those who watch the show. You will hear how Gilmore Girls got fans through college, divorce, family deaths, depression, accidents, and illness. You will read about a fan who had a Gilmore Girls wedding, a soldier who discovered the show while deployed in Iraq, and a high school teacher who recreated the Festival of Living Arts in her history classroom. The stories in this section represent a diverse age and geographical spread, with fans from all over the world sharing what the show means to them. As you read these collected stories from cast and crew, creators and cult fans, I hope that you will find within their stories the inherent oneness that unifies all those who touch, or are touched by, the show. Those whose lives have intersected with Gilmore Girls appear to be all cut from the same cloth, and are part of a wider community that has been shaped by the unique character of the show. They are the global citizens of Gilmore Girls, who each have a story to tell, and a life that has developed in some way through their exposure to the show, and their love for it. For these inhabitants of the Gilmore verse, it is so much more than a television show. It's a lifestyle, it's a religion, it's a family.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again. With a new bonus chapter In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”). In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her. Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”). Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.
